I am not sure that these were for volunteers. Maybe, but they were definitely for the professional bandsmen, etc.

Darned if I didn't find and buy both variants again today. No documents, though. They are both numbered on the reverse. The metal variation is a very well-made badge. They will make good trading stock once I get home.

Thekodex,
Nice little medal - "excellence in the propaganda of culture in the Army and Navy" with very low s/n. I think it's from the 1950s. I believe we have discussed it already on the forum, just can't find the thread. Alexei |

Re: Badge "Excellent Cultural Patronage Of The Armed Forces Of The USSR".
These Badges are a little mysterious but they were not awarded by the Armed Forces but actually by the Central Committee Of The Trade Union Of Cultural Workers. They were originally issued (from the late 1950's onwards) numbered (with matching document) to members of the Trade Union but in the late 1970's the numbering ceased. I know at least 16,500 numbered examples were issued by the end of 1970, so continuing at that rate until 1991 they may be a total of 50,000 or more of them out there.
I wouldn't be surprised if some of the lower numbered examples with "strange" fonts etc. are actually unnumbered later types that someone has tried to "improve".
