Re: Off to Russia/the Baltic tomorrow

The name is Bolshunov, Stefan Kuzmich

Strangely non-Russian sounding first name, but that's what I get. It's a little surprising only because he has such a Russian patronymic, Kuzmich. (from "кузьма")

Citizen of the USA is sent for the colony in Russia

It is from the Russian newspaper.
I used Alta Vista to translate from Russian language. Sorry if it's not excellent translation.
Just for the information - the price of these to coins is about 500 Ryb - or $15.00-20.00

In to Rostov-on- Don the citizen of the USA is sent for the colony for the smuggling of cultural values. [RBK] 22.10.2010, to Rostov-on- Don 1347 [v] to Rostov-on- Don student from the USA is sentenced to 3 years of colony for the smuggling of cultural values. Re: Citizen of the USA is sent for the colony in Russia

Looks like the Russians have just bagged another prisoner to exchange. I'm glad I buy all my Russian Empire coins in England or the US. Here in England we have a long history of "stealing" other nations' history so you need to know what the consequences are before you start. 3 Years banged up for 2 cheap coins isn't worth it.... Three years for trying to smuggle Lenin out I'd take my chances!

It could probably be adapted to be a FOX sit-com, "The Serial Killer and The Numismatist"...

Re: Citizen of the USA is sent for the colony in Russia

That's a harsh sentence. Is there some crack down going on now? It's been talked of here off and on for years, but never seemed that serious. (The number of items available, coins/medals/etc. is so vast and ongoing that it just seems obvious that it's not enforced.) Multi-year prison time for such minor smuggling seems like a message more than just law enforcement. Is it?

Re: Citizen of the USA is sent for the colony in Russia

Jesus, 3 years for an 1899 Rouble and a 1924 Rouble??
Scary story--I wonder if he's a former Soviet Citizen and someone who didn't bribe the customs agents when the coins were discovered.

Reminds me of a book I read recently, about a British guy doing 3-4 years in Russian prisons and labor colonies: Amazon.com: Tomorrow You Go Home: One Man's Harrowing Imprisonment in a Modern-Day Russian Gulag (9781592403752): Tig Hague: Books: Reviews, Prices & more

Wow.

It still amazes me. I am sure the coins were probably F-VF-XF condition anyway, probably worth $50 combined..
