That "someone" is the mint.
BTW, the silver medal is self evident to be 2nd class because of its color. The problem is confusion between gold and bronze medals, hence the markings.

Great stuff
Thanks for the info. I guess the previous owner of this got all three classes.
The bar itself is brass. The front of the bar has a black piece of plastic or black tape. Three holes were drilled for the posts to go through. A nut secured the badge and the post was cut off neatly flush with nut. Very neatly done. Dat |

Dat,
Can you please post a large scan of the front and back of the Gold medal, the one with only one indentation at the bottom; or email them to me. Marc |

Dat,
Thanks! Can you please tell me if there is a mint made indentation at the bottom on the rim (similar to the 3 indentations on the bronze medal) or not. Also, the ring at the top of the medal seems to be of a different type from those on the other two medals. Can you confirm or infirm. Marc |

Markings
Hi Lapa,
I do not see any similar indentation on the bottom of the rim. The ring on top of the medal is similar to the other 2. v/r dat |

Mark,
The only marks that I have seen are on the bronze BDHX medals. The gold medal - both kinds, of 10K gold and of brass - have NO marks. Also, I have several silver medals (both of real silver and of "german silver" and NONE is marked with 2 lines, as implied by you in post number 129 of this thread. I would love to see gold and silver medals with lines - If you have such variations. Regards, Tal

Tal,
I have seen, and I believe that I have (somewhere...) silver medals with 2 lines (the german silver type). Indeed, the medal that accompanies the large diploma I posted (see post 106) has 2 indentations. I have not seen a 10K gold medal, but I take your word that they do exist; as to the brass gold ones, so far, I have only seen them with 3 indentations, and never came across a specimen without. I would summurize that the versions without indentation were issued first. As it became apparent that there might be some confusion between the classes, the indentation system was devised. Marc |

Gentlemen,
I have examples of both the silver medal and the bronze medal with no indentations on the reverse so I can confirm that they do exist. I suspect that they are probably earlier than the examples with indentations, to avoid confusion as mentioned above. Regards, Paul |
