If given the choice, always pick Khumsan.

Memorial located just west of Ferghana and intended to memorialize the 94 Independent Rifle Brigade, erected on the location of the unit's founding. Photographed May 2016.

Re: Cemetaries And Military Memorials.
Memorial to the 23 Tank Corps erected in Artemovsk (present-day Bakhmut) in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine in October 1971 (the 400th anniversary of the city's founding). The 259 and 266 Rifle Divisions were given the honorific title "Artemovsk" for liberating the city, but oddly no mention on the memorial.

Re: Cemetaries And Military Memorials.
Today I saw an interesting and puzzling headstone in St. Louis, MO. The attached pic is from the web https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/...ahoo-ben-moshe . At the present time, there is a combat helmet on the horizontal stone as is customary on Soviet monuments.
Was Lt. Moshe an American citizen who joined Red Army? He has Hebrew/American name. A Soviet Jew would have Yiddish/Russian name. Were his remains brought to the US? It is possible that he is buried in or close to Stalingrad and the monument was placed simply as a memorial. In fact, at the same cemetery there is a gravestone for husband and wife with the inscription "Now you are together", the death date of the former - just the year 1942, the latter - specific date years after the war. Clearly, the husband perished during the war and the wife immigrated to and passed away in the US. Lt. Moshe's gravestone is not shared with a wife or another relative. I would love to learn more about the identity of this hero. His story is most likely the unique case of an American who fought in Stalingrad. Surprisingly, his deed is little-known and a web search does not produce additional information. |
