Re: Captured!
Here is another unusual captured banner image from my collection. I consulted with a native Russian speaker (mixed Russian and Ukrainian parentage) and he provided this commentary:
Text on the banner (in Ukrainian): "Union of Baker's Industry, Prilutsk Group Committee". Location -- Ukraine, the town of Prilutsk, Chernigov Region (Northwest of Ukraine, close to Kiev). The photo is apparently made not long ago after Belarus had been invaded by the Army Group South in 1941. Chances are the photo was taken around the time of the Big Kiev Defense Operation in August-September 1941. The troops mugging for the camera are obviously Waffen-SS. However, I haven't yet been able to determine precisely which SS division passed through the Prilutsk locale in late summer 1941. Nevertheless the two front-runners are either 2.SS-Division "Reich" (later "Das Reich") or 5.SS-Division "Wiking", both of which were involved in the huge encirclement of Soviet troops during the Kiev operation. "Leibstandandarte" and "Polizei" were attached to Armeegruppe Nord while the men shown in the photo do not appear to be wearing the distinctive insignia of "Totenkopf". If anyone can provide further details, I'd be grateful for them! Regards, Mark Jaeger |

Re: Captured!
One more image you might enjoy. My Russian-Ukrainian friend also provided this commentary:
Text on the banner(in Belorussian): "First Belorussian <probably, State> Drama Theater ". The flag belongs to the First Belorussian Drama Theater. The theater was based in Minsk, which may very well be the location of the photo. There is no specific individual names, date, or unit ID attached to this photo. However, Minsk was occupied very early in "Barbarossa" (29 June 1941), so a reasonable guess is that the banner was found (probably in the theatrical headquarters of the aforementioned organization) by foraging German troops in early July 1941 and was photographed at that time. The banner itself appears to be made from a heavy red velvet material. Regards, Mark Jaeger Last edited by MarkJ; 11-01-2009 at 05:32 PM. |

By any chance would you have a better quality (e.g., larger) image of the banner shown in your 3-10-2007 post (or at least be able to provide the source of the photo)? I'm actually thinking of creating a reproduction of this item (at least to the maximum extent possible). From what I can see, and using the heights of the men as a comparison, I'm guessing the banner dimensions are roughly 1:2 (about 1 meter x 2 meters). The flag also seems to display gold bullion fringe around the edges. I can't determine the fabric used although it could be wool bunting or perhaps cotton. The field is undoubtedly a fairly dark shade of scarlet with a gold/yellow star. I can't tell if the star is sewn or painted (I'm leaning toward the former). Furthermore, the color of the hammer & sickle device is uncertain to me, especially since the photo quality is poor. I'd speculate the sickle may have been black or dark brown (better contrast against the yellow star), but, as it happens, red also photographs as "black" in b x w photography. Anyway, I'd be grateful for any help you could provide! Thanks! Mark Jaeger Last edited by MarkJ; 11-02-2009 at 09:05 PM. |

Re: Captured Soviet banners
Neat photo. The flag itself appears to be of a very high quality.
What I find interesting about all of these photos is that the Germans always seem to be looking like they got something great, but they have no idea what it is.:) Phillip
