the reason the piping is not an exact match to the band on the B&W photo is that the fabric is different and, for an identical hue, will photograph slightly differently because they reflect light differently. I agree the piping is red and emphatically not white in that photo. Somewhere, perhaps on this site, i read a little tutorial on how black and white photos can "change" the color of epaulets and piping.
