Gentlemen,
My set of first, second and third class state prizes. Please pay careful attention to the second class one (in the middle) and then observe the reverse in the next picture As you see the reverse of the second class is strange, first of all it appears to be a pinback and secondly it doesnt have a number, nor a place for the number (assuming it was unissued) I bought it in baku about seven years ago, without the book. The other two have books, but the numbers do not match (but i did buy it from the families of the awardees) So, is the second one a fake????? Shiva |

I was interested to see on a well known dealer website a state prize medal (2nd Class) with the serial number #1442, reported as being from 1962-1966. As there was no documentation for this medal, I was wondering if there is a serial number vs date of issue list like there are for some of the other medals. I already own one of these medals, so I'm not interested in purchasing it, I'm just curious. Anyone care to elaborate, or post a serial number vs date list?
Kind Regards, Shane Cook. |

State Prize statistics
Fellows,
Here's some interesting info on State Prizes: State prizes existed in two emissions: 1) 1st emission - medals in 3 classes. Gold and silver-plated. Years of issue: between 8.9.1956 and 11.10.1967 Emission size: about 60 per year (all 3 classes combined) 1st emission State prizes were designed after Stalin prize (Stalin's head on the avers of the medal was replaced by Sickle&Hammer emblem). Majority of Stalin prizes in mid 1960s were exchanged for newly designed State Prize medals and documents. 2) 2nd emission - single medal replaced prior 3-class emission. Material - solid gold. As of 11.10.1967 replaced earlier 3 class awards bearing the same but with slightly different design. Emission dates - October 1967 - till break-up of the USSR (1991). Emission size: initially about 70 were issued per year, growing to about 300 per year during 1970s. Although somewhat less important than the Lenin Prize, State Prize remained a very prestigious award until the last days of the Soviet Union. Since 1975 State Prize was most often issued for top results in labor and for improvements leading to increased productivity. Thus it eventually became a top worker's award rather than a recognition for outstanding science and arts, such as the Lenin Prize. William |

hi to all,
i try soon to post some images regarding state prices of soviet estonia. There was two types, this are the first types. Made from silver and the small star is gold. Later type is thin and oval looking. They are made in Tallinna Juveelitehas. Also a large sertificate came with this state prize, but i didn't have enough luck to find them. |

I have just noticed that a well-known dealer in New York has placed on his website a Soviet State Prize medal, with the award document. The numbers on the medal and the document match.
Has anyone ever untied this gordian knot with respect to why some medals have numbers that match the documents, and some do not ? |

This is the medal in question. As Alexei said (in his web site, when describing a state prize medal and document):
"Numbers of the medal and the document do NOT match (some researchers believe it has to be that way, some think, they must have belonged to different people). " You probably read this thread - there is NO consensus in the forum regarding that issue. Tal Inbar

I have one I bought from a Georgian artist a while back. I was initially upset that the number in the accompaning booklet didn't match the number on the award, but I found out that these numbers did not match - I hope I am right.
