Matteti,
Thank you for your support :thumbsup You too got in trouble with this guy? :( In my short collecting life I've already met all sorts of dealers: friendly and patient to a novice, businesslike, chatty, secretive, successful and not very sucessful, in short, very different people. But all of them treasure the basic principle of commerce - a returning customer. Except for this one, I guess. What a peculiar way to run a business :chuckle Sergei |

I would also enjoy to know, just to be able to avoid a bad experience.

Guys,
Are we talking about a high-flying New-York dealer here? Marc |

now that I am thinking straight
I feel that I should tell you a bit more about this incident. I bought two expensive (for me) medals from this dealer before, ran one of them through this forum, it's genuine. The other one is probably ok but I thought it would be too much to ask from the experts here cause I really need to get myself a black light first. Anyway, this is how it went. In my email order, I asked for three good service medals, all in silver, and typing well after midnight (like now) I entered: "20 yrs KGB in silver, XX on the back" (don't laugh). The dealer had only one KGB in silver listed, XX on the obverse, obviously, at $60. A week's delay with reply. A quick note from him to say "the medals are available, send the cost+postage+paypal charge". I did. A little later the medals arrived, an ordinary brown envelope, ad-hock packing, all sub-standard even for cheap medals. No medal with a XX, a different KGB medal instead. My first reaction, the guy is taking me for a sucker. I complained, he responded, the thing escalated into a slagging competition. All the time he insisted that he was following my order. Only when I weighed the medal and Desanthik said on this forum "No way it's silver" that the dealer acknowledged it was in New Silber but insisted that the price was fair. He did give me a return option, only I have to pay postage (and if I want to make it foolproof that's at least $18 from UK+the envelope) and no refund on paypal fees ($2-$3). What's the point? All in all, my impression was that the dealer was not his usual self. Who knows, maybe he is in trouble and simply has no time for a small buyer. Then why didn't he just say so? We are both Russian, we share the language not to mention the culture etc. I have very mixed feelings about this. After all, collecting is supposed to be fun.

But so far, I consider myself very lucky because this is the only transaction that turned bad for me in over 6 years! Last edited by matteti; 09-20-2012 at 04:09 PM. |

Neither did I, but at the same time, I was ordering with a different order of magnitude. This most likely explains that. I have known dealers in other specialties who simply would not lower themselves to deal with "the commoners"; if you need to ask how much it costs, you're not a prospect! My advice: let them play (and choke) on their rarefied-oxygen heights; there are other much friendly, courteous and helpful dealers (especially ONE of them on this forum ;) ). Marc |
