Unrated is qualified as pilot, but the lowest qualification there is.
I think the 3-2-1 is awarded as you make more&more flying hours. I need to check my books before i walk out on too thin ice:)

Pilot's badges
Maybe a silly question, but what kind of pilot'sbadges were worn with Air force uniforms in the 1955-58period?
I know that there was a qualification badge for Tank troops introduced in 1955, but it seems that a new AF badges were introduced in 1958. So, did pilots still wear old style badges? Or was there something new introduced? |

If I remember correctly, the introduction of the first 2 classes of the then new Pilots / Navigators(bomarders) wings were indeed made in 1955.
However, it would take some time before everyone got rid of their '49 large wings, so it would be safe to say that in these years 55-58 both new and old style wings were worn. Hope this helps. Best regards,

Thanks, tht helps a lot. Good to know that old badges are OK.
But how did those introduced in 1955 look like? I haven't found any picture, but this is only due to my lack of literature on this topic. |

These are the first post '49 wings for pilots & bombardiers/navigators. I'll check out the literature later for the details about which came in which years.
1 picture shows all these, in comparison with the first metal post-war wings from appx 1949 (also in this pic a wing for naval aviators of a much later date) Best regards,

Another comparison, this time the later introduced in the 60's to 1971 wings.
A noticable difference to the early ones are the length of each individual "feather" in the wings. Also all classes here have blue enamel in the background. Best regards,

I correct myself:o
After reading up on this, the first pattern wings (all classes) were instituted on 8.may 1950. Regulations did not require aviators/navigators with general's rank to change from the '49 pattern. Source: Александр Кибовский, Алексей Степанов, Кирилл Цыпленков: Униформа российского военного воздушного флота. В 2 томах. Том 2. Часть 1. 1935-1955 Best regards,

Re: Pilot's Badge
Are these legit wings (as in are these fantasy pieces or actual use) and if legit what era were these used? 1980s? The few I've seen appear to be screwback. Are there fakes currently manufactured if these are not fantasy insignia?
An earlier post in this thread made some reference that the navy never had its own insignia. I believe the soviets didn't have a carrier force other than helicopters before it was dissolved, but had other air resources. Would that make these fantasy pieces no? As you can tell I'm way out of my area here. Last edited by meyerse; 09-30-2016 at 08:43 PM. |
