Re: Translation Help

Thanks for that. I was leaning towards that but the letters aren't very distinct so better safe than sorry.

Re: Translation Help

Would anyone happen to know what 5 ГТСКОСК is?

I have a citation to a 4th Motorised Battalion Of Machine Gunners Guards Senior Sergeant Machine Gunner and the 4th MBA is in the 5 GTSKOSK.

His citation seems to be more of a laundering list than anything else "Officer's Greatcoats, Solders Gowns, Trousers" (or at least that's how I'm reading the handwriting). Not what I was expecting to see for a Machine Gunner Guards Sr Sgt.

Thanks in advance.

As a start, it was subordinate to 5th Guards Tank Division.

That was a tough nut to crack. Brute force googling didn't work. Most likely, 5 ГТСКОСК stands for 5-й гвардейский танковый Сталинградско-Киевский ордена Ленина Краснознаменный, орденов Суворова и Кутузова корпус (5 Guards Tank Stalingrad-Kiev, awarded orders Suvorov, Kutuzov Corps). In Sept. 1945, the corps was transformed into 5 Guards Tank Division.

Re: Translation Help

Excellent!

Now that sounds like a unit with some history behind it!

Just strange that the Automatnik is more of a Laundromatnik.

The Guards Sr Sgt was awarded a pair of Medals "For Combat Merits" when the second citation comes up on the podvig site I just wonder if he was combating with a trouser press?

Research can really open up some hitherto unimaginable citations. Since the citations were Top Secret you can come back from the war and tell the children about your great feats of heroism whilst being a Senior Sgt. in a Machine Gun unit of a tank corps.

Documents can't be always trusted in regards to one's job in the military. My dad's uncle was a barber in a cavalry division, became POW in Sevastopol encirclement. On ОБД Мемориал site where info can be found on most KIA and POW of GPW, his record shows him as a sapper in a Special Battalion of Shore Defense.

Re: Translation Help

Absolutely!

I know a sniper who went into Iraq on day one and after about 9 months or so went to his quartermaster and asked "why haven't I been paid?". The quartermaster took his name and number and according to the paperwork the sniper was not (nor had ever been) in Iraq and had not been paid at all for his 9 month "tour".

The records will show that he was kicking his heals at a barracks in England for the entire duration but he was in the thick of it the entire time.

Wrong records are better than missing records however. I have petitioned the now former minister of defence Fox to hand out some WWII Medals which are still owed but he wouldn't. Since the army lost the records (if indeed any were kept), a surviving serviceman's 19 months of eligible service (where only 30 days are needed) is by the by.

Still lots of "Catch up" to be played by all governments I think.

Plenty to be going on for now in this digital age.

Re: Translation Help

I would very much appreciate some help translating this snippet or a service record. The handwriting is so scribbly I don't know what to make of it.

Thanks in advance! :thumbsup

Making some guesses, I can decipher the Russian scribbles a bit, wait for someone with proper English to translate or correct:

Старший офицер боевого Уир - 341 центра боевого Уир
(на командном пункте ПВО)
Руководитель полетов 53 гвардейский ИАП (Истребительный Авиационный Полк?) , 1 гвардейская ИАД (Истребительная Авиационная Дивизия?)
