Case in point I really wanted one of these hats and all I could find was this junky thing with the title

"Soviet Field cap of the in Afghanistan. Lot of Badges."

The sewed on patch is what got me. Also I rember one time I wanted a side cap to go with my 1980's issue Gymnostroika and all I could find was those ones with the pins and patches on them. If I want the patches and pins I will buy them not on a hat or banner. If I buy a hat or banner I want one that is in good shape.

Jeff,

They do sell them now, on the streets of both Moscow and St Petersburg. They are apparently a big hit with tourists, especially American ones. Go figure

Guys,

Most, if not all, of these badges are pinbacks. The fabric is not exactly silk mousseline, so simply remove them, and you have a perfectly nice, original hat/cap.

Shoulderboard belt, anyone?

As an added bonus, it will give you a place to keep any extra stars that won't fit on your cap.

The real eBay joke

Anyone notice the ORB for sale on eB?y tonight.

I was watching it through the last 3 hours to see how things would go.

At around 2 hours to go, it was listed at $112. But then things started getting fishy.

I am not saying this is what happened but here is the strange thing. The medal is offere by someone from the Netherlands. They haven't sold many thing (10 rating) so they are not an established dealer.

However, with about 1 1/2 hours to go and still around $112, all of a sudden "superhenkman" (also from the Netherlands) comes in, bids twice to up the price by about $6 but never outbidding the current bidder.

Then when someone does outbid the current bidder, "superhenkman" comes in again and pushes the bid up another $15 but again never outbidding the current leader.

Granted, the medal went finally for $170 and the second bidder had his highest at 167.55 but you have to imagine that it could have had a lower price if not for "superhenkman" coming in and jacking the bid.

And when I read an article recently about how people get their buddies to jack up prices to make more money, I didn't think it was so widespread.

Guess I was wrong.

The shoulderboard belt...

is hilarious. The sad thing is that the buckle wreath looks like it once belonged to a flag officer parade belt...wonder what happened to the rest of it?

The buckle is your standard officer's buckle with enamels applied. General's and marshall's belts had the Soviet gerb that fastened globe-through-wreath.

The belt pattern looks like raw company-grade officer's shoulderboard material, as an uncut strip. Judging from the inside of the belt, if the belt was not woven like that, a regular belt is probably underneath.
