Re: Curiosities
@desantik
Maybe it was digged out somewhere else and then sold in Volgograd, or he just mixed things up a little bit - my friend made a round trip to some historical WWII locations such as St. Petersburg, Moskva, Kiev and Volgograd. I will ask him. The serial number is complete and I will see, if I can research it. I hope the medal was just ripped off during a battle and the soldier went to a hospital or at least war cemetery. My grandfather also died on a battlefield near Leningrad and found his final resting place there and I do not want anyone to dig in his grave to remove his medals either... Jens |

Re: Curiosities
Jens,
For information, some bright mind has been faking these for some time and selling them as "relics". The one you show may or may not be genuine. Marc |

Re: Curiosities
@ Lapa,
forensic laboratories in Marburg (Germany) proved blood stains and iron oxide on the medal`s surface today. So this one was definately hit by a (steel) shrapnel, severely wounding the recipient of this medal. Jens |

Re: Curiosities
Fascinating indeed!
And if you don't research it, you could test the DNA and compare the isotope level to certain areas of Russia! You could... But I've never seen it done with blood though. I'm looking forward to this! |

Re: Curiosities
A friend of mine works in the university hospital of Marburg as a doctor and has some connections to all this laboratory stuff and the personnel; so everything is possible ! Regards, Jens |

Badge cleaning
The subject: a recent acquisition. You can see the crud on the enamel everywhere except where I could squeeze in the cloth by pressing my finger (under the red star).
The crud: unidentified Bulgarian crud (the badge came from Sofia). Possibly a virulent strain of communist muck. Care must be used. The materials: warm water, dish soap and a microfibre cloth. The results: ??? Stay tuned, friends.

Re: Badge cleaning
Does it happen to have that unique Bulgarian tobacco stink about it?
I often have to air the award cases and documents. It has also been known for me to place them around scent bottles as not to make everyone feel so sick. If smoking does this to metal/enamel what does it do to your insides?

Re: Badge cleaning
The tobacco/burning dung stink from Mongolian items is also legendary.
Almost as bad as the teen-age-boy stink that it took forever to mitigate with a Suvorov military school tunic. Last edited by medals73; 04-15-2012 at 08:01 AM. |
