Thanks for the reply!

But you haven't answered my question about the post...

What's the deal with the subvariations?

Thanks,

Rusty.

Rusty-

Were you able to find out anything about your Red Star? I have a similar one... It's strange because it has a 3mm (diameter) screwpost and is 1.6mm thick at the star points and 4.5mm at the center.

Contrast that to a 'regular' Red Star (s/n 798590) which has a 3.5mm (diameter) screwpost, is 2mm thick at the star points and is 5mm thick in the center.

I checked the mondvor website, and they didn't address the thin type specifically (unless I missed something in translation...) Any thoughts?

Dave,

I have found nothing about this one...

Even the obverse looks a bit different... It's more flared than others!

I also have numbers: 227,286 & 280,439 and those are just like the other Screwpost-base ones!

Do you have any ideas?

Is this the rare Cheliabinsk Tractor Factory variation?

Rusty.

Which Type of Order of Red Star is this?

This is serial number 40411, I paid about $3.00 for it in Berlin back in 1992. I have never seen one with the makers mark so high.

Red Star

Looks like a Type 2, early Monetny Dvor with screwpost base.

The "deep screwpost base" variation you're discussing is the latest of 'standard' screwpost base productions, S/N range 62,213-254,266.
However, there were other sparadic productions, due to the fact that mints were relocating back and forth, etc. One of them looks similar, but range is 450501-460048 (not sure if it was issued by Chelyabinsk, but it is quite rare).

Alex.

P.S. Including the image of this rare var., for comparison.

AlexF: After looking at you star and comparing it to Dave's and mine... We have sharper edges where's your's looks more rounded. Does the obverse of your star look more "flared" than others?

You also stated the range to be: 62,213-254,266 How would you explain 227,286 which looks like any other star?

How rare would you estimate this to be?

Thanks,

Rusty.

Alex F:

What is the diameter of your screwpost on this Red Star? Is it 3 or 3.5mm?

I just find it strange to use a screwpost .5mm thinner than every other award produced!

Someone else said it was a type two and quoted a serial number ranger. The thing is, my serial number is lower than the range he gave.
