HSU #7834 was awarded to Volkov Nikolay Nikolaevich.
Obviously, PMD is not the only one. |

Eugene,
Thanx a lot. Do your references tell you anything about the circumstances of how he got it, and what branch of service he was in? It's date of issue? Thanx a lot for the help! Gene |

Since I don't do it -- in this field at least -- let me caution that while there is a generosity and a willingness to share information on this forum, we need to be sensitive to the fact that most (many) researchers don't "give it away for free" any more than medical doctors do. For many, the research they do is done professionally, and for pay. Their willingness to share things from time to time shouldn't be taken as an indication that they no longer care about feeding their medal habit (or paying their mortgage) by doing paid research.
Asking for free research -- research that is normally charged for -- puts the researcher in a difficult bind and may leave the questioner wondering why their question has been (justifiably?) ignored. Ed Haynes Last edited by Ed_Haynes; 01-11-2003 at 08:09 AM. |

Ed,
Your points are well taken, but I didn't think I was asking anyone to research this for me as I thought the research on HSU recipients had already been done. I'm a member of the Wehrmacht Awards Forum and you can inquire about anyone or any award, and if someone possesses a book documenting the conditions and circumstances regarding the award(s) you will be answered with a wealth of information. I wasn't trying to get something for free in a surreptitious way, I simply thought it was at someone's immediate disposal in a reference book. Thanx to everyone for their help and understanding. Gene,
If I may add a little bit to your responses. The 2 Volume Heros of the Soviet Union books only contain the names and biographical information of the awardee. They do not contain serial numbers. The same is true for the Order of Glory books. As to the difference with German awards, I'm sure that if you asked for infomration about the specific person, that you would have been provided with that infomration quickly and fully by the board members. But this is not what was asked for. You asked for a medal to be identified. I wish I could look those up for you, but I do not have the list and cannot. And the post by Ed H. makes a good and valid point as to why this is different. Paul McDaniel, and it looks like Eugene, has this list. I know that Paul charges for the information as he paid a large amount of money for the list and he does this as a job. If Eugene wants to give the information out for free, more power to him. This will be a great help to the collecting community. If you still need the infomration from the reference books about this person, I will be happy to help, as I'm sure will many of the board members. Take care and good luck in your research, Ed |

Ed,
I really don't want to flog a dead horse here but Eugene was kind enough to identify the recipient for me. I then asked about the person and his background. I do not own this particular HSU (or any for that matter) and should I truly wanted to have it "identified", I would without hesitation seek the services of Mr. Paul McDaniel. Sorry for all the confusion, peace out and spasibo-- Gene |

Sequential Numbering of HSU Medals & Docs
Is it possible for an HSU medal received in 1948, for action against the Germans in 1945, to have a lower serial number than an HSU medal received IN 1945? Same for the number on the large award doc. Can the one issued in 1948 have a lower number than one received in 1945? (The number in the lower left hand of the doc)
Thanks |

Clarification of Dates on Certificate
Which date is the actual date of the awarding of the medal in the large doc. The date in the lower left hand corner or the date in the middle of the doc? The dtae in the middle of the doc is February 27, 1945........same in the small booklet.
Thanks |

Doug,
The answe to the first question is yes, it is possible. The first date ("YKA3OM OT..") is the date of the Supreme Soviet Decree, and the person is considered a Hero since that date. The second date is the date of the actual presentation of the award, which of course happened some time later. Alexei |

Doug:
I've seen Hero Stars separated by a number of years with newer stars having lower numbers. For example, I owned a Hero group to an Air Force general who was awarded his Hero Star in 1965 (one of those politically-motivated awards!) At about the same time, I was offered an excellent group to a Hero who was awarded his title in Budapest in 1956. Strangely, the 1956 Hero number was HIGHER than the number of the Hero awarded in 1965!!! Why? I don't know... I had originally thought that Hero stars would have been very tightly controlled, number wise, and they should have been sequential. I guess not... --Dave |
