Soviet medals in Afghanistan
Greetings to all from Afghanistan,
I went to a local outdoor market today and found 2 vendors selling the following items. As you can see from the photos, the choices are somewhat slim...unless you're into the Motherhood series. None of the medals have the pentagonal hangers. Prices??? Well, I did asked and it is not worth mentioning here in this forum. You be best going else where unless you like to haggle. v/r Dat |

Strange that the hangers are missing, stranger still is the choice of suspension as the replacement

Pentagonal hangers
Hi Art,
Here is one reason for the choice choice of hangers. Most of the Soviet era Afghanistan medals also used the pentagonal hanger. The vendors here would remove the hangers from the Russian medals and attach them to the Afghan medals. Lots of incorrect hangers and ribbons on the Afghan medals. If you look at the photo on the right, there is a Order of Honor with a Mother Heroine hanger. After taking the photo, I tried to re-attach the hanger back on the Mother Heroine (right side of the OoH, missing the gold star). That really irritated the vendor; he wouldn't let me. Anyway, here is another observation that I've seen at every flea market in the world. When I pick up an item to look at it and then put it down at the same spot, why does the vendor immediately go to the item to "rearrange" its postition? As if the item is not in allignment with the universe or something. |

Dat,
Why did the vendors do this? was there something more desirable about the Soviet hangers?
