Re: Fake Orders of the Red Star

I thank you all for the nice words of support. Indeed, I like this medal but as a "wanna-be" collector, I regret not having being able to immediately detect the problem with the enamel.
In fact I realized the defect only when back home. :(

Off the records, I could negotiate a cheaper price if I would have seen the repair before paying for the medal.....:D

Re: Fake Orders of the Red Star

You learned a good lesson and it only cost 10 or 20 bucks. That's not bad. Many of us have paid dearly for our life lessons. :)

Re: Fake Orders of the Red Star

It's good to go. It's probably a GPW catch-up or October Revolution or similar award given in the mid/late 60's (after the "long service" days) but pre-Afghanistan.

Red Star

How about this one. Red Star with scratchings on the back. I tried to play with making it darker so the letters stand out. Any ideas?

Re: Named Red Star?

It is hard to see.
I am not sure 100%.
The first word looks like: "O gnev" - I am not sure about the correct translation - ANGER
The second word looks like: "naroda" - OF THE PEOPLE

Re: Named Red Star?

Brendan,

I think it might be "Ognev, Nikola(i)"

Re: Named Red Star?

I'm with Marc on this one: "Ognev Nikolai." First, that's what it looks like. Second, using family name followed by first name with no commas is a normal name-writing convention in Russian. Today on current stuff in the daily course of work, I see names listed that way more than with first last. Third, I've seen names scratched on awards like this before. Fourth, it would be very grammatically incorrect if it said "anger of the people" because it would actually be a somewhat butchered form of "of angers of people", and "people" would have the incorrect ending ("-a" when it should have been "-ov") (I think) so I am certain it's actually some dude's name.

Re: Named Red Star?

Yes, the name on the piece is Nikolai Ognev. Nikolai - first name, Ognev - last name.
