ORS 179,039 - screwpost base sharpie...
Something I picked up last week. I checked it against the usual web and book references, and the serial number, mint mark, and screwpost base seem to line up with what they should be. There's no evidence of serial number tampering. The star points of this dude sure are sharp: it could be used as a throwing star to some effect.
Whaddya guys think? Good or bad? |

I wanted to get some opinions on this red star I found in an antique shop today. I didn't buy it, but the owner said I could take some photos since there was not a return policy. For $50, It's certainly a decent price.
I believe that serial number (1332528) would denote a 1945 issue. So I took a chance and bought it today. Here are a couple better pictures. I got it for $40. The guy had it labelled as an "east german" medal. Mike |

Thoughts on this Red Star
As most know now, Russian militaria and awards are totally alien to me in every way. Saying that, what would be the opinion of this Red Star? Is it correct and if so, which version would it be and the possibility of knowing when it was issued??
Thanks....oh by the way Thanks! Mark

Re: Thoughts on this Red Star
I have a serial number only 750 digits away awarded for long service in 1948.

Re: Thoughts on this Red Star
Well it makes me feel better to know that it is the "real thing". If I understand correctcly desantnik, it was awarded in '48 for long service? Would this have meant active service during the war???
In addition, does Russia have the equivalent of the National Archives like Great Britian has to make this a researchable piece?? Thanks.....thanks.....thanks Mark

Re: Thoughts on this Red Star
There is an adage in collecting - before you buy the piece, buy the book. This is even more true in regard to avoid forgeries and more appreciate your pieces. See my book Echoes of War
There are Russian archives that contain service information and can be accessed for information. My data indicates there is a high probability that your piece was awarded for long service. If so, the individual in question served during the war, but the nature of his (or her) service is unknown until you research it. For example, he may have served teaching in a military academy during the entire war. |
