Re: Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards.
I would say so, because it is cheap, soft and easy to handle (low melting point) and the color fits ! Just try to scratch it with a sharp tool like a knife - it should be very easy to cut a small bit off !

Re: Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards.
I would leave it.
It was done by the real owner and I dont think its our place to tamper with things, no matter if they're not to our tastes. This is just my opinion though, we're all different! Tom |

Yes, you might be right but the serial number is not visable at this point.

Re: Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards.
True, its not, but if you get the record card back and it confirms that Red banner #2 was also awarded to someone that was awarded RB #1 wih a serial number ending "25" then revealing the rest of the number isnt really necessary I dont think.
If you were to try and reveal the number though, id remove as little as possible and leave the screw back in place. Again though, this is just my opinion! Tom |

The answer is no, not really. Techniques used to clean silver pretty much take the patina off. Techniques and products used to put patina on, in other words to make something look older than it is, do exist, but are noticeable to someone who is used to looking at patina. Patina is the result of time and environment. Manipulating it is probably possible, but in the end why do it?

Thank you for your reply! I understand. Somtimes, in several orders have nice look patina, so i just wondered how do they made. Actually, I have main question about order document repairing. If the order book's page is torn because of rusted stapler, how can i restick it? I tried use some glue before, that was bad. What is the best methoed you think? |

Re: Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards.
cHello, Bill. Thanks for reply.
Yes, actually, I'm trying to leave it as original condition these days. I regret that i tried to stick it with glue. That was order of Red Star's document... But i'd like to know the best way to repair order book just in case. |

Re: Damaged, Repair, Clean, Preserve Soviet Awards.
I have Order Books, ID Books that are falling apart, and torn campaign documents (Causcasus, Stalingrad, Leningrad). As a collector I prefer documents unmolested and stored/archived properly to prevent further deterioration. I would prefer you leave them alone, so I am probably not the person to ask as to any particular methodology. Perhaps some of the others might wish to contribute ideas or suggestions to this discussion.
