Re: Thoughts on this Red Star
I'd be surprised if it wasn't long service.

Re: Thoughts on this Red Star
Gentlemen,
I again thank you for your gracious assistance. The statement of buying the book before the item is well taken and I have an extensive library for my main collecting theme of British medals and I have a few reference books on Russian/Soviet militaria. One of which is McDaniel/Schmitt's, "The Comprehensive Guide to Soviet Orders and Medals". The book is actually signed by Paul McDaniel. I woul like to follow up on "LAPA'S" response that this Star is a Type 3. This is where the confusion comes in for me as it relates to McDaniel & Schmitt's well written book. I would have thought that this was a Type II as it does not have rivets like the Type III has??? I have read through it several times but it still hard to determine which variation I have for example the Star listed. In addition, this and every other piece I have posted came from my father's collection that I inherited upon his passing. Cheers, Mark

Re: Mutilated RS
That's quite bizarre. We've seen some red stars with suspension rings added on, presumably for wear with non-soviet uniforms. What's with the "nut-post" and the weird serial number? The latter seems to be in the wrong place but there don't appear to be buffed out areas lower down.

Re: Mutilated RS
Serial number is fine, and it was awarded to a Soviet Sergeant.

Re: Mutilated RS
What's the nut doing there? was it part of a re-weld?

Re: Mutilated RS
Hi Alexei,
Very interesting. What would be the reason for the "mutilation" ? Cheers. Ch. |

Re: Mutilated RS
I can only guess that initially it has been converted to some sort of pinback device (you can still see a rectangular shadow on the reverse), which has obviously failed long time ago. The nut and pewter solder on it were quite possibly holding some sort of replacement pin, which got broken off. Eventually, the owner had drilled a hole through the top hand of the star. Maybe it was even sewn on to his coat or something. The ring looks like the most recent repair to it.

Re: Mutilated RS
There was a post out there several months ago with another ORS similarly "pierced". You can get ORS ribbon stock without too much difficulty, so a guy who wanted to walk his own path could quite easily rig up a five-sided suspension with the correct ribbon, hang this ORS on it, and mount it up with the rest of his medals on one side of his coat. It's not like the uniform police were going to come after him. They already had their hands full with those old guys who hung their OG3's with 20thGPW ribbons. ;)
