Gold Star HSU "ГЕРОЙ СССР" Type Variations
I know a collector who has Hero of the Soviet Union Medal #883, but it is on a Type 2 suspension. He thinks it was originally a Type 1 because in the newest HSU book by B.P. Voroviev and N.V. Efimov, it has a photo of HSU winner PA. Pelytov who won HSU #885 who has a Type 1 suspension on his medal.
Would I be correct to assume that HSU #1 through 1190 came on a Type 1 suspension? There is a photo of HSU I.N. Nemchinov, whose medal is serial numbered 1190, with a Type 1 suspension. There is a photo of twice HSU Sultan Amet-Khan with Type 1 HSU#1136. Does anyone know exactly at what serial number or range where it went from Type 1 to Type 2 suspension?? Thank you! |

re: Gold Star HSU "ГЕРОЙ СССР" Type Variations
Henry,
You put your finger on a problem which happens to be more complicated than it seems. In reality, the classification is more complex than the T1 and T2 as defined by McD. Effectively, there have been different dies used for the manufacturing of the stars themselves, onto which the suspension issue must be grafted: . Suspension: here, all is fairly straightforward. There are two types of suspension, the early one (small, with soldered connecting ring at the bottom of the frame, although it is possible that the diameter of the screwpost differs between earlier and later suspensions of this type), and the later one (larger, squarer, with separate connecting ring). One nuance though, the first type was issued both with Мондвор (earlier) and Монетный Двор (later) screwplates, therefore we have two varieties in the first type. The switch from early to late type suspension seems to have taken place somewhere in the 1200 range. As to screwplates, up to roughly 800, they were Мондвор; from about 1100, they were Монетный Двор. At this stage, it is impossible to be more precise about the interval in-between as we need to find untouched originals to confirm which screwplate was originally issued. . Star: early and later stars used different dies and punches, so effectively, we have two types of stars. Early die shows a wider space between the first and the second C in СССР; late die shows a wider space between the second and third С in СССР. This implies minute position differences of СССР with respect to the word ГЕРОЙ between the types (photo 1: HSU 473, 893, 1392, 4340, 2653 T to B). Also, the punches used for stamping the SN were slightly different: on early stars, they were somewhat thinner; on later stars, they were a bit thicker (photo 2). So, all in all, we end up with the following: T1V1 Early star on early suspension, Мондвор screwplate T1V2 Early star on early suspension, Монетный Двор screwplate T2 Transitional: early star on later suspension T3 Late star on late suspension Marc |

I agree. These nuggets are to valuable to let sink to the bottom of the treasure chest :) Thread moved to the Titles section and renamed. Marc, feel free to PM with comments.

Re: Ovcharenko D.R.
Careful with that axe, Eugene!
That's a fantastic bit of research... an average kill of 7 men per grenade.... sounds rather fantastic...... Since he was being "interrogated" does that mean SMERSH had to have a word with him later whilst that Gold Star was dazzling them?
