Christophe,
No other ideas..as has been noted previously, this mark is unusual in that it doesn't appear like the typical makers marks we've seen. When I first purchased the award I didn't even think it was a makers mark, but thought it was simply a tired or bored craftsman maybe tapping the tip of one of his tools into the metal. It almost appears to have the same diameter as the top of a rivet. Perhaps this was the tip of the tool which was placed over the rivet and tapped, giving the rivet a small overlap?

Art,
Thanks for your comments. Interesting to notice that this "rivet" seems to be always at the same place... Ch. |

Christophe,
In the new Avers-6 they call them "technical marks", whatever that means. I will try to do some research on the Russian Internet. Alexei |

... and also "mintsmeister's marks". I am wondering if they had ever researched this.

Alexei, Christophe,
This is certainly an interesting point to make. I think we have more or less all been thinking these marks are "mintsmeister's marks". I sent a few mails to the mints asking if they had any information regarding this subject but with no response. I have a feeling it is a distinct disadvantage having to mail in English. It might be worth a try in Russian though, if one of our Russian speakers has the time. ;) Whilst researching various other topics I have found that the people reply much more readily if the mail is written in their native language. Eddie.

Guys,
I have tried to communicate with Moscow mint in the past, but it would seem they don't want to be bothered with such noncense  I am hoping Eddie would have better luck. Alexei |

This may or may not help, but Henry Sakaida sent a typed letter ( in Russian of course ) and received a very cordial reply.
