If one person has a channel to purchase an award for $50, while the masses (and even Russian collectors!) purchase the same award on whichever venue for $100, I'd say the value of that award is what the latter category pays for it. And value is evolving constantly, it changes over time; 5 years ago the value of a postwar Red Banner was $700, now it's $250. Would you have said 20 years ago that the value of an OG3 is $50?

hello Gents, in our world there's not only E... Have a look on allegro.ua, and you'll see some differents prices about common orders and medals.

Red stars beginning at 500 hryvnias, so 46 euros.
Slava 3rd with docs à 1500 (135 euros), withou doc 800 hrivnia (75euros)
Labor glory with doc 800.

So these are ukrainian market prices, with buy-it-now, comprising seller margins...

The Russian market is a very different place from the US market. Awards aren't just floating around here like they are in the Motherland (comparatively). I really think ebay, a few dealers, and a very few forums are the best representation of our market. I get the sense the number of transactions in other venues is much smaller.

Regarding the quality of an item, personally, it boggles me that Russians are so obsessed with perfection. I think we're much less concerned with quality in the US. The perception of historical value is also quite different, I think. But to each his own.



It's interesting to me how the discussion so far has been centered around particular prices rather than price ranges, which I think is a more valuable statistic, especially for awards that are more readily available. To illustrate, let's take a nice 1950s long service Red Star. What sale/offer prices does one observe for this type of item? In my experience, the offer range is $40-120, with most sales $50-80. So, given this info, what price are you willing to pay? At this point, the answer is relative, a matter of personal preference. But you can be reasonably sure that if you wanted to sell the medal later, you could eventually find a buyer somewhere in that price range (assuming no drastic changes in the market).

I have absolutely no argument with your very first statement. However, that being said, I would respectfully point out that the US market is neither the biggest, largest or most important market in the world for Soviet awards. It may be a "local habit" to consider that true civilization exists only within said borders, but once again, let's remember that US population represent roughly 4.5% of World population, even if not every one collects Soviet OMDs

For sure, Marc. But here we have very limited access to Russian supply. And when we do have access, we bear a hefty premium.
