Re: Soviet Military and Hollywood

Jeff,

Great shots! I think you have a part of the combined Soviet-Hollywood history.

Re: Soviet Military and Hollywood

For those with an interest in Stalingrad, I'd actually sugges the German movie called (as you may have guessed) "Stalingrad". I'd rate it as one of the best war movies ever made. And in terms of depicting Stalingrad theatre, much much better than Enemies at the Gate. Interesting is also that it depicts the German side of the battle which is atypical. The acting is excellent, cinematography as well, etc. A gem of a movie (made by the makers of Das Boot).

Janet Leigh was playing a character of Lt. Anna Marladovna, a MiG fighter pilot who defects to USA and turns out to be a Soviet spy. Anyway, in this one scene, she is wearing a concoction that is supposed to be the Soviet Sr. Lt. Air Force uniform, but the designers came NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Sure for 1950, this was believable, but for today's standards, this was a JOKE.

She was wearing:

On the right side of the chest - Order Red Star (5 inches wide), Guards Badge and an Otlichnik badge that were horribly constructed and looked like they "survived" a jet explosion.

On the left side of the chest - Two HSU Stars (2 inches wide each), and a two row of rbbon bars that were eclipsed by the gigantic HSUs.

Also, she spoke PERFECT ENGLISH, and that just ruined the whole experience for me.

Check it out for laughs.

I wish there were photos...

Double Heroine of the Soviet Union and Princess Leia prototype. John Wayne lusting after a commie and considering making her a Mother Heroine...

So wrong on so many levels.

Re: Soviet Military and Hollywood

That's Hollywood for you - everything is bigger than in real life (or is that Texas?). Either way, their research budget must not have been half the size of those things on the outside of her uniform.

As for the hair, well we couldn't cause an international incident and try to find an ugly female Russian heroine, so we just make her hair look "frumpish" for that time period in a poor attempt to make her look less attractive. A whole lot of work for nothing, if you ask me.

Re: Soviet Military and Hollywood

Maybe those Hero stars are the right size and it's the actors which are the wrong size...... The B.B.C. in their documentaries always seem to get the Soviet awards wrong when making recreated scenes, when they show you a military intelligence colonel photo from 1960 with a chest of high end orders and then in the recreation he's got a very late uniform with a few commemorative medals from 75-88 it kills the scene if you know what to look for.....
