Yes, the reverse screwplate is not original issue.

Hi Guys, I suspected that the backing plate might not original to the badge, so thanks for confirming that. I am not complaining though at the price I paid.

Cheers, Ade.

Ruiz,

I believe that these 2 badges are WW2 or immediately after it.

Got this in the mail after winning it on our Polish auction.

Can anyone figure out the screwback on this thing? What are the letters on the photo and does anyone have a similar screwback?

Jeff,

Your badge looks good. The enamel is typical of pieces that have spent some extended amount of time buried.
As to the writing, it remids me of the stamp of some "private" (ie: not Monetniy Dvor) badge maker.

Ok, I have come across two different borders for badges that are considered WW2 variations.

A flat line border is one variation.

Here is a photo of the other border that is of interest. It is more of a braided rope look. Anyone find others?

What do you make of the metal plate in the shape of the guards badge in this photo?

What would be it's purpose?

Simple decoration. Later generations used something like red or white plastic to highlight the badge.

I was guessing it might have been a stiffener for use behind the uniform cloth, but the exact silhouette and the big hole had thrown me off.
I've no doubt that Paul's in the right of it.
Nice and unique in any event. :thumbsup

It may have been a stiffener too, but there is plenty of photographic evidence of demobilized troopers sporting them as highliters.

I'm guessing the big portion was cut out of the metal one to reduce the weight and that's why future generations used plastic - easier to shape and lighter.
