Re: Ebay jokes

Don´t know if this is really a joke, but interesting nevertheless. I highly doubt the alleged provenance of this badge.

the description:
"The exclusive offer.
Soviet Army GUARDS badge.
This badge has rescued a life to Russian soldier to Afghanistan"

I think we are supposed to believe that the badge "took a bullet" for the wearer. Of course there is no way to prove or disprove it. I shoud think this would be of great sentimental value to someone or his family (if that's what happened).

Re: Ebay jokes

I agree if the bullet hit straight it would gone trough the badge or at list curve it to other shape. if it's pass by there would be damage of metal not only enamel. It's just a curved badge that someone decided to sell. And obviously who we carrying Guard badges in Afghanistan? What for ? To make the snipers live easier?

Re: Ebay jokes

I think this just came out of a fire (or maybe intentionally burned inside a chimney) and the seller is trying to get rid of it with a typical too-good-to-be-true story.

And I thought the same as ph3s. A bullet would never leave a badge bended, but with a concave shape, I suppose.

Re: Ebay jokes

Not only that but it looks 50s/60s vintage.

Re: Ebay jokes

In other words, a load of hog wash or "hooey" (the latter is a very interesting word since it actually has a meaning in Russian that is not only unrepeatable here, but I don't think I ever managed to get a precise translation other than "all of the four-letter words in English X2").

GOLD STAR ‘HERO OF THE SOVIET UNION’ MEDAL

The Gold Star Medal was introduced on 1st August 1939. The total number of persons who were awarded the medal was 12,745, the great majority during World War II. By the 1970s the award had been somewhat devalued. Important political and military personages had been awarded on the occasions of the anniversaries rather than for any heroic actions. Leonid Brezhnev was awarded four, one each for his 60th, 70th, 72nd and 75th birthdays. All cosmonauts received the medal, one for each flight. The last award was made on 24th December 1991. This medal is not an original, it is an accurate reproduction made for the props department of a major US film studio.
Hollywood perhaps?

Re: Ebay jokes

Stalin would become apoplectic and die of a stroke (again) if he saw a high Soviet award with the Star of David as the central symbol.
