ok, so if it is a stiffener/highlighter, then maybe the big hole would be an "indent" to help screw it tighter or to get a finger in to help loosen the screwback.

Its to stop the top heavy badge from spinning upside down when being worn. We in reenacting use cardboard for the same thing.

WW2 Guards badge - ground-dug but unissued???

Is this one unissued, or was it just secured by it's original owner?
That thing between the badge and a screwplate is a paper folded few times.

How about just issued, and then lost by the owner??? (Things drop out of back packs etc. all the time) Nice piece though.

ATB,
Tom

Tom,

This was ground dug in western Poland. Mostlikely found with the bones of the deceased.

In regards to the badge, DANG IT. I WANTED TO WIN THAT ONE!!!! :D What was the other things that was auctioned with this badge?

Seems to be similar to the one I won that had the medal plate. It was the soldier's way of keeping the top heavy badge from rotating on his tunic.

Isn't that slightly macabre, not that it personally bothers me that much, (and possibly illegal??? Black diggers are surely breaking the law??).

Ah, but not dug out of a grave, dug out of a battle field.

I have 7-8 that are like that. They find all kinds of things digging along the Oder all the time.

Was well know up to about 15 years ago that you could go walking in the wood around Gdansk-Sopot-Gdynia and find stuff still just lying around.

New construction on the highway surrounding Berlin bring to light new things all the time.

DANG! I wanted to win that auction as well.:) I didn't.:( I wanted tank emblem that was with that. There was also a hanger for 2 medals, but possibly non-soviet if my memory serves me well.
But I got this badge from the buyer :)(a bit complicated matter).

This badge was not attached to any uniform - there's no trace of cloth between the paper and the badge, just some earth.

cloth may have preserved the paper but ripped off. Might have disappeared over time leaving just the paper. Is the paper loose around the post?

Wish I had been able to do that with that combat medal that I was out bid on when I won that ORS that was ground dug near you. Is there any way to find out who bought after nearly a year?
