Re: How to display Soviet awards

Both fine ideas, but the steam notion gave me another thought - so I'll take it to the dry cleaner's.

Phillip,

I wouldn't if I were you. Dry cleaning is dry only in the sense that they don't use water, but they use a variety of dissolvants in very liberal quantities. You may end up with a very discolored ribbon at the end of the process.

Re: How to display Soviet awards

I just had several additions to my collection. I personally like the booklet to the SVB badge (Union of Militant Atheists/Godless) and WW2 excellent navy sailor badge. For SVB membership one had make monthly or annual payments. There is a payment stamp inside the booklet. I also like that the booklet is in Ukranian.

I wish I could get a larger photo of it online for yall, but the 50K rule somewhat limits me, haha.

Marc, ole buddy! It seems our constant play with sarcasm has come back around to bite me. I would no sooner take any cloth item from any era before 2001 to a dry cleaner than I would dip myself in those chemicals. The joke was meant to be about the small size of the cloth surface and the mini-press that I imagined in the cartoon world in my head. Besides, in the US, many dry cleaners have signs up about not being responsible for "articles" left on uniforms (another aspect to the comedy in my mind).

That is one heck of a collection. You have some really nice pieces in there.

One more question: is the round SVB badge one saying "Communism" or the one with "Socialism"? I ask because I can't make out the letters. I keep missing out on a membership booklet to go with my badge, and the last one on ePay went cheaply.

Thanks. It usually is a matter of luck finding them when the seller doesn't know what he or she is selling.

I have the one which says the same thing only with "Communism" and is apparently more common than yours (at least according to Avers). And the red ribbon badge is even more difficult to find.

What about the drawing of the badge on the cover of the document? It is also almost impossible to read which word, but it looks like it may start with a "K."

Re: How to display Soviet awards

I doubled checked the front of the booklet (it's a bit faded) and it does say Socialism). Here are some images inside the booklet. This guy made at least one membership payment. Maybe he was not as convinced of atheist as he should have been

Re: How to display Soviet awards

I'm guessing the most likely scenario is that they changed the slogan to "Communism" and had to print new booklets. But you are right; he might not have been a complete "convert" to the atheist cause.
