Re: White Wedding
Although I can't see the chevron, star looks to big to be a regular general star and Vasilevski and Malinovsky didn't make marshall until 43 and 44 respectively and by summer 43, there would have been a different model uniform. I dug out a disc of MSU data and the other july 40 marshal (besides timoshenko and shaposhnikov was Kulik. Next up was Zhukov in january 43. All the pictures of Kulik show him really bald and this guy has at least some hair in the back. Maybe it's Voroshilov...or maybe it isn't a marshal after all in which it could be any body. In any case, great picture and thanks for sharing

Tractor Lenin, Red Banners and Honorary Chekist (V) Badges to VChK-OGPU-NKVD Men
Gents,
I decided to launch this thread in the Orders sub-forum although it could just as well have launched in either the Badges or Uniforms, Hats and Insignia sub-forums. These images are absolutely superb. The first image has an interesting, albeit tragic back story. Depicted is Zveryev, Yulian Lvovich. He was Russian and born on June 21st, 1895 in Saint Petersburg. He began his association with the VChK-OGPU-NKVD in 1920. I won't provide the full range of his assignments, however, his career culminated as follows: May 21st 1934 - July 10th, 1934 - Chairman, GPU Turkmen SSR July 15th, 1934 - July 20th, 1937 - People's Commissar for Internal Affairs Turkmen SSR. October 21st, 1937 - Arrested. September 7th, 1938 - Convicted/sentenced by the VKVS SSSR to VMN, executed by firing squad. January 23rd, 1958 - Rehabilitated by order of the Supreme Court of the SSSR. Rank: Senior Major GB effective 29 November 1935. Awards: Honorary Chekist (V) Badge - serial number 472 awarded in 1929; Order of the Red Banner - serial number 21280/20280 awarded 3 April 1930. Regards, slava1stclass |

Tractor Lenin, Red Banners and Honorary Chekist (V) Badges to VChK-OGPU-NKVD Men
Gents,
Unfortunately I have no information regarding this fellow - to include the rank he holds. A Tractor Lenin, Order of the Red Banner and Honorary Chekist (V) Badge would seem to suggest he's no small fish. Regards, slava1stclass |

Leather Outerwear
Gents,
While not overcoats, these combat engineer drivers are dressed for the elements in some fine looking issued leather outerwear. Regards, slava1stclass |

Re: The NKVD is back in style, literally !
Great photo !
I wonder if they might not be military railways personnel? It also looks as though the negative was flipped, based on the fact that their cross belts are over the wrong shoulders and the prong of their belt buckles is facing the wrong way. |

No, they are combat engineers based on the crossed pickaxe and spade collar insignia. Regards, slava1stclass |

I really could not see the collar insignia clearly and I wondered if it might be the crossed hammer and wrench used by railway troops. |

Re: The NKVD is back in style, literally !
Normally I would say seeing 3 shoulder straps "flipped" like that would indicate a reversed negative but the prongs of the belts are actually the "correct" way. (Think about how a right handed person would pull the loose end and fasten prongs with the left) Maybe the picture is legit as is.

Yes, Jeff, you're absolutely correct.
I am obviously easily confused in differentiating my left from my right ! :chuckle |
