"XVII Conference Of The MPRP" Badge.

I saw this one and though it looks well made, I think it has a clear coat of plastic or some resin and the pin attachment on the reverse just doesn't look like pre-1991 Mongolian/Soviet work.

If I am wrong, by all means please tell me.:)

Re: Soviet Mongolian badge?

You say so because of the shining on the upper left corner of the badge, right?
I think the same. There must be a resin coating on it, and -altough I´m not an expert- it must be because it´s from a late period manufacture.

Re: Soviet Mongolian badge?

It is Mongolian (and should be moved to that area?).

For the 17th conference of the MPRP. Battushig shows it as his B25.

The "pre/post-1991" distinction doesn't hold the same significance for Mongolia as it does for the (former) USSR.

Re: Soviet Mongolian badge?

Well, here's the thing. If it looks too shiny and new - especially with some sort of clear coat over it, I always doubt that it is "Soviet era" as I was told/read about this one.

Now for the big confession: simply for my personal tastes in collecting Mongolian (security mostly) awards, when the USSR was gone, so was my interest in anything made in Mongolia afterward. Since I only collect Soviet and Soviet Bloc awards, anything past 1991 from any former communist country is not of any real interest to me. History for me demands a line in the sand somewhere and since I was raised in America and fed that steady diet of Cold War crap, I really only want to deal with the earlier stuff - with one major exception - the SVR as it survived the breakup of the KGB pretty much intact as the old First Chief Directorate. The FSB is interesting, but it is essentially a "too many chiefs" situation in Russia these days. In fact, they remind me of the Duma during the early 1990s and Zhirinovsky's antics that kept people liking Yeltsin by default.

Did this even come close to answering your question?:weird

Re: Soviet Mongolian badge?

While things (phaleristic) changed in a big way in Russia and the other successor states, they didn't shift to the same degree in Mongolia. Some orders, medals, and badges got redesigned as the national coat of arms changed (as it had before), others didn't. Other than the Order of Chengis Khan (ex officio for the president) nothing new came in and none of the old awards were ended. Some ugly new items were introduced in the area of badges as central control relaxed and new institutions preliferated (for example a crop of new for-profit "colleges").

Chief among those "ugly new items" were the new stamped security service anniversary badges - at least in my personal opinion. And that pretty much sums up why I don't have much interest in the post-1990s stuff. That, and the whole lack of "Sovietness" that I mentioned before which isn't so much in the craft as the history associated with it.
