Re: Soviet Medals awarded to non-Soviet personel

I'm afraid there are no photos, my great grandfather mustered out in 1946 before he received his medals. He rarely spoke about the war and refused to wear the medals, he actually eventually threw them in the fire, that is why we know so little about them and why it is so difficult to try and research his past.

Mark,

May be you should contact the Russian embassy and see if they would be willing to help. I know it's a very long shot, but I am not sure what else to suggest.

Re: Soviet Medals awarded to non-Soviet personel

I don't know where it is now, but there was a posting string several months ago about British sailors receiving Soviet awards. I remember following a related link on this, and reading a website that mentioned specific ships (or so my failing memory tells me). Maybe someone else out there remembers this discussion?

A large group of British (and US) merchant marine/Navy who delivered to Murmansk received GPW jubilee medals, especially the 1985 one. I don't think this awarding applies to the time frame mentioned above.

Re: Soviet Medals awarded to non-Soviet personel

The thread I remember was about actual wartime awards, but I can't find it now. The search engine comes back with too many responses for me to sort through.

Here is one thread for these awards: http://www.soviet-awards.com/forum/s...voy-medal.html

At least it is mostly from later awards (after 1958), maybe it helps.

Re: Soviet Medals awarded to non-Soviet personel

The one I read about was for actual standard Soviet wartime awards given at the time of the war. It's been many months since I've seen it.

I seem to remember the thread Kirchgoens is talkinmg about, but can't find it either. Generally, this was Dave Schwind's area of expertise.

I can't find it in General Talk and I don't believe I deleted it but I'll keep looking.
