Alexei-

Thanks for the link! I recently picked up the group to the senior medical officer with the 42nd Brigade who was there at Stalingrad. Wow! What a job he must have had!

Thanks again

The official RKKA Order of Battle shows the 42 Independent Rifle Brigade with the 62nd Army in October, Novembe and December 1942.

Latvian Rifle Units

Greetings!

Anyone out there have any unit histories for Latvian units during WW2?

I just got back research for a fellow who served in the following units:

24th Rifle Corps (City of Riga)
43rd Guards Latvian Rifle Division
130th Latvian Rifle Corps

I'd like to find the battle history for these units during these time periods.

Interestingly, he joined the NKVD in Riga in 1940. From May through August 1941, became Chief of the "Special Detachment" of the NKVD with the 24th Rifle Corps. That month, he became Chief of the Counter-Intelligence detachment "SMERSH" for the 43rd Guards Latvian Rifle Division. Finally, in June 1943, he transferred to the 130th Latvian Rifle Corps, holding the same title.

Rather wild guy!

Dave,

I did a quick check and these are not Latvia military nits. They are regular Red Army units. They are not even territorial militia units (of the type eliminated in the 1938 reforms) based on an ethnic group. The "Latvian" in their names are simply honourifics the same as "red banner budapest and vienna rfle division" or "kursk" division.

The 43rd Guards Rifle Division was formed in October 42 from the 201st Rifle Division which had been formed in Gorki in August. It fought in Latvia from September 44 on. It was part of the ...

130th Rifle Corps which fought in Latvia unde the 67th Army. It consisted of the 43rd Guards and the 308th Rifle Division.

The 24th Guards Rifle Corp was in the 7th Army from July 43 to February 45. It does not appear to have fough in Latvia.

5th Guards Tank Corps

Can anybody tell me of any good publications in English dealing with the 5th Guards Tank Corps during World War Two?
Thanks

Upa Order of Battle

Trying to find what probably is an impossible bit of info; the Order of Battle or something close of the UPA; Ukrainian Partisans who took on the Germans and Russians ( good idea) at the same time during the war.

Upa

Great shots.

I have been able to find a good amount about UPA history, but very little on structure and organization. No where near an OOB.
