Tsarist religious oddity
I stumbled on a couple tsarist religious oddities, medals commemorating various saints, but I can't find much in the way of references. These came from the Ferghana Valley of Uzbekistan, where many, many ethnic Russians once lived (and a few still do). Any concrete ideas or info on these two (beyond what they say on the medal itself)?
The first one is a 500th anniversary of Saint Sergey Radonezhsky medal. The second one is commemorates Saints Nikolas and Nevsky, and has what looks kind of like Moscow's Christ the Savior cathedral on the reverse (the one Uncle Joe razed in the 30's, and the mayor of Moscow recreated in the 90's). It think it's from 1887, but it's hard to read. I could also read the date as 1827, but find it unlikely it would be so old. |

Re: Tsarist religious oddity no. 1...
Interesting stuff Brian. I just found this thread and I can't help any but I like 'em. :)
Thanks for showing different stuff like this. I imagine myself wandering around bazaars in faraway lands looking for stuff like this.
