William,
Apparently there are loads of variations of this award and some more than others are very expensive. They were made with different metals, some were in one piece some were in seperate pieces. I only have the one picture to go from and it looks totaly different. Here is what I notice: The hammer and Sickle is missing in the red star. The star and the flagpole are too close together. In between the star and the flagpole you should clearly be able to see an industrial building with a smoking chimney. On your pic the building looks more like a farmhouse. The second building is completely missing. To the left of the Dates there should be Laurel leaves Above the dates only about half of the MG wheels should be visible. Between the laurel leaves on the outside edge and the red star four cogs should be visible. The soldiers Hat is too big. His arm should be outstreached as though as standing at ease. In the pic I have the quality looks a lot better. Those are the main points I can pick out at the moment, if I can go from my pic as being original then surely that must be at least suspicious. But having said that if there are so many variations who knows. Eddie.

Here is a pic that I found, this is not the one I described. Although badly worn you can still see a lot of the points that I mentioned on the other badge.
Eddie.

That's completely different guy on the badge!
Most likely the one I posted is a fake. William |

William,
Alexei has also got a nice pic of this badge on his site, have you seen it? Maybe Alexei could post it here. That one looks similar to the one I described although there are some minor differences. One thing I have noticed though, they all have a hammer and sickle in the red star. And the soldier has his arm outstretched. Eddie.

Guys,
I have seen several variations of this badge, and the differences between them are quite significant. They are all being reproduced, and those fakes have no genuine wear traces; cheap and uneven enamel on the red banner; and fake patina. I am afraid Williams's badge is one of those fakes. Alexei |

Here is another for sale. According to Likhitskiy, it is "To the Hero of January events of 1918 at the plant Bol'shevik" and he lists this badge at $3400.00.
It is presently for sale on our favourite auction site and is listed at $0.99. It has to be a copy/fake or the seller doesn't know what he has. In any event, could I get an opinion? I can't find much info on this badge. The reverse is different from the badge posted two posts up.

Danny,
I saw this one too. It can't be a good one, no way! Even if not knowing much (almost nothing in fact) about these old pieces, this one has all the common problems of a fake. Why don't they simply list them as replicas?! I wonder who could be so naive to believe these extremely rare pieces could be authentic and pay a lot of $$$ for them! Dolf |
