What's this on the navy flag?

What is the red patch on the edge of the flag used for?

I have seen that on several of my flags too, not just Soviet, but I don't know what the purpose of the little piece of cloth is.

Why does it need such indication? btw, I think it's on the bottom side.

Flags are stowed folded tightly and are often put up in a hurry. Trust me, it helps to have a quick reference for which end is which. Look back a few years ago when at some major event in the US the Canadian flag was run up the pole upside down.:rolleyes:

Personally, I think it's a good idea, whichever side it is on - just so the sailors know which end the tag is on.

I checked some of my flags today; navy flag had the thing on bottom side; large state flag had two things, one on top left and one on bottom.

Can you post a photo? What does the state flag patches look like? btw, my red banner navy ensign flags have no such thing, wierd. (maybe some have)
