Re: Fake Restoration, Construction and Development Medals

Just got this in the mail before Christmas. I'll have to take another pic of the reverse and post it later as the first one didn't turn out but based on these pics what do you guys think about this award and its document. None of these pics are really great thanks to the stupid angle i took them at so i'll post better ones later.

Cheers
Chris

Chris,

Document looks OK, as to the medal, you need to post better scans of the front and back of the medallion.

Re: Fake Restoration, Construction and Development Medals

Priviet to Everybody!!!!!
First of all , you have done A GREAT FORUM !!!!!! Well done to everybody.

I just found this Medal for Restoration of the Black Metallurgical Enterprises, a FAKE one. From first sight the medal looks good ,has good details and almost correct ring and comes with original presentation box and Document (date of award : 18 Feb 1950). After a close examination I found out the ring is not a part of the medal, but is lead soldered to the medal (!!!!!). They have done a very good job and you have to use a X20 magnifying glass to see the lead solderind, plus a small gap between the medal and the ring. The medal is only 31.08 mm in diameter, weights 15.08 grms and the thickness on the rim @ 3 o'clock is 2.68mm ( I use one Mitutoyo ABS Digital Caliper 0.00 mm and one Kern CM Precision Electronic Scale 0.00 grm: Both those tools cost me an arm and a leg but it was a very well spent money!!!! )
I would like to send this picture to the forum but I do not know how I can do this.

I would like to say a HUGE Thank you to Nota Bene. I followed his advices about detecting fake medals and orders, since 2001 (when he has the "always under constraction and appologize for any dust" site on internet).

If somebody can give me any information about adding the picture to he forum will be deeply appreciate it.

Bolsoie Spaciba!!!!

Yannis,

That is a good one. I have seen a few newer fakes on which an original ring was neatly soldered. It seems to be a new trend until fakers learn to strike medals with the proper ring

Re: Fake Restoration, Construction and Development Medals

Dear Marc
Thank you for the reply.
What do you mean with the "good one"? Is it a good (original) medal or is it a good (fake) medal? As far as I know this medal has struck as one piece and the diameter is 32 mm. The most of the copies have a bad habbit to shrink after moulded. This one is a cast made one and you can see small pop marks and the letters on the reverse are not "sharp" (traces from moulding in the letters).
I have also few more Fake medals and I will post some pictures later.
Spaciba!!!!

I'm pretty confident about this BAM-medal, but it never hurts to ask for opinions...! :)
