Chief Marshals and Marshals of Branches During The Great Patriotic War.

The below list identifies all Soviet officers promoted to the rank of Chief Marshal of Aviation or Marshal of Aviation during World War II. All told, there were two Chief Marshals of Aviation and six Marshals of Aviation by war's end.

Chief Marshal of Aviation

A. A. Novikov - Commander, Soviet Air Forces (Date of Rank (DOR): 21 FEB 44. His DOR as Marshall of Aviation was 17 MAR 43)

A. Ye. Golovanov - Commander, Long-Range Aviation Forces (DOR: 19 AUG 44. His DOR as Marshall of Aviation was 3 AUG 43)

Marshal of Aviation

F. A. Astakhov - During the Great Patriotic War served as Chief, Main Directorate, Civil Air Fleet (DOR: 19 AUG 44)

G. A. Vorozheykin - Deputy Commander, Soviet Air Forces (DOR: 19 AUG 1944)

N.S. Skripko - Deputy Commander, Long-Range Aviation Forces (DOR: 19 AUG 44)

F. Ya. Falaleev - Deputy Commander, Soviet Air Forces (DOR: 19 AUG 44)

S. A. Khudyakov (aka A. A. Khanferyants) - Deputy Commander, Soviet Air Forces and later Commander, 12th Air Army during combat operations against the Japanese in August 1945 (DOR: 19 AUG 44)

S. F. Zhavoronkov - Commanded Soviet Naval Aviation from 1938-1946 (DOR: 25 SEP 44)

Based on comparing photo images, my best guess is that the Marshal of Aviation seen standing next to MSU Meretskov in the Karelian Front Victory Parade formation on Red Square (see the photo in the book "Parad Pobedy") is either Marshal of Aviation S. A. Khudyakov or N.S. Skripko.

Regards,

Voroshekin

Here is the Air Marshals Victory Parade uniform worn by Voroshekin. We were able to get it from his relatives back in 1998. Note that air marshals wore light blue collar and cuffs; this means you could not simply ad air marshals boards to an air generals VP uniform to upgarde its rank.

most of these air marshals were members of the red army early on who had administrative backgrounds that the new service needed. Some took some basic flight training while others did not. It was really the postwar high command of the air force that was dominated more by men with flight backgrounds.

Also, I don't thin any of the regular air marshals were HSU's. Most had high command orders though; I know that Voroshekin had 2 Suvorov 1st class orders.

DougD:
Shouldn´t the crown of the visor cap wear the golden wings and star on the top of it?

...the wings on the of the cap came with the 1949 Red Air generals parade uniform, along with brim eggs. Army generals wore their M1945 VP uniforms from 1945 until 1954, but generals of the air force only wore it until 1949. Anyway, air generals did not have wings on the M1945 caps.

I had in one of Zhavronkvs uniforms along time ago; he was head of naval aviation...in my research of the WWII Air Marshals rank I never heard of Astakhov; interesting addition.

Here is one of the boys....

Guys,

That group belonged to Major-General A. V. Vladimirskiy - one of only 5 people ever awarded THREE 1st class Kutuzov orders.
