Re: Victory Parade 2010

Bill, you've changed your avatar? Nice.

This is a strange coincidence and only slightly related to the topic here, but I just heard a segment on the local public radio station called "From the Poet Laureate's Shelf" and my distant cousin (a professor at our university) was just reading a poem about soldiers returning to their wives and lives here in the US after WWII. I don't know who wrote it (though he thinks himself a poet and isn't altogether bad), but I thought it timely since no other media venues here paid much attention to Europe this weekend. Even the rather ironic and sad death of Polish President Lech Kaczynski only made the crawler on most of the American 24-hour news channels.

Re: 9th of May in Berlin

Is there any truth that the "PC Police" altered the original crushed swastika to keep from offending some folks?

I don't think so, It has been done with the monument in Austria definitely. But this one as far as I remember always has crushed swastika under the sword and foot

Austria, that's where it was. I just got them mixed in my memory (not hard these days).

Re: Victory Parade 2010

I was in Moscow on 9 May but the entire parade route area was inaccessible. The MVD had closed off of all the streets leading towards Red Square and Tverskaya Street. We were standing about 400 yards from Red Square, and there we could only see the planes flying past. A real bummer...

I did see a lot of veterans though, I will post some pictures soon.

Re: Victory Parade 2010

Does anybody know what was a colorful mop-looking thing that American troops carried at the parade?

Campaign and other Ribbons for units. there are to many for a banner, hence another pole.
