12. Permanent home address of the prospective awardee and the address of his family: ______________

Short, concrete description of his combat feat or merits:

During the fighting with the German invaders for the village of Suragino on May 7, 1943, comrade Shokin displayed bravery, valor, and courage. Skillfully maneuvering his tank on the battlefield, during this battle he and his crew destroyed 1 enemy anti-tank gun, 2 wooden pillboxes, 3 dugouts, and 2 firing positions. Even though the approaches to the foremost front line were heavily mined, comrade Shokin skillfully led his tank through the mined sectors and was among the first to break through the enemy defenses. He took active part in evacuating two tanks, which had been disabled by mines, from the battlefield, despite the hammering enemy artillery and mortar fire.

He personally took part in evacuating comrade Krasnikov, a severely wounded radiotelegraph operator, from the battlefield, despite heavy enemy rifle, machine-gun, and mortar fire.

Conclusion: For killing enemy troops and destroying materiel, for evacuating disabled tanks, and for the bravery, valor, and courage he displayed in the process, he deserves the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd Class.

I am surprised that this medal survived. Did they not wear their medals into combat?

This particular subject of wearing awards into combat has been covered many times and the short answer is "not usually worn during combat". But you can have the full spectrum of tales of awards that are unrecognisable after being "unearthed" to combat veterans never taking their awards out of the box.

The information about his death really brings a sense of perspective back from the brave deeds that he committed and shows that like us all, these brave men were human.

Sad, but a really nice collection.

At least we know his awards are in safe hands and will be treated with the care that they deserve.
