Soviet Busts.

Hi everybody,

I own a Bronze bust depicting Josef Stalin. It stands 72 cm tall (about 28 inches tall), and weights 56 kg.
I've searched around a bit on the internet and realised that it's quite rare due to the fact that most of these monuments were destroyed after Stalin died. Although I've been able to locate some Stalin busts in similar sizes standing in public areas in small city's in Russia.
Now, to my question; Does anybody know how many of such busts Stalin could've produced and how many of these would still be left?

Since there are many knowledgeable people on this forum, I thought this was a good place to ask about my Stalin bust. Thanks in advance for your replies.
Sincerely,
JED

Solid bust at over 100 lbs, but unless there are any markings on it, finding where it's from will be like winning the lottery. These were in town squares, buildings, conference halls, etc.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies!

Unfortunately, there isn't any foundry marks on it. So you're probably correct that it would be hard to pinpoint from where it could have come from exactly. But would somebody know if many of these sizes were created (I know smaller miniature sizes was produced in higher quantities), but of lifesize busts of this kind and an indication of how many of these are still left intact?

Thanks once again

JED, I think you will never know the correct answer to your question. As other said they were hundreds of them and it's impossible to know which ones were kept and which ones were destroyed. Lifestyle busts are still pretty more difficult to find today.

I am sure there is no register that says how much Stalin busts were made each year, so therefore it is impossible to answer your question. Communism cult was some sort of a "religion", so they were a lot of them, but for sure few busts like yours might have been left intact.

Here is a bronze statue from one of my collector friend. The statue is huge (still smaller than yours) and pretty heavy.

It is 45 cm height and weight 19 kilos.

It is dated from 1952 and it was made by professor Ingal at the Art Academy of the USSR.

Bust/statue collecting - another addictive habit...

I've found collecting busts and statues to be another addictive habit. I now have about 19 different types of Lenins, three or four Felix D's, a couple Stalins, one Voroshilov, one each equestrian Frunze and Budenney, a Kirov, a Zukov, and a couple battle monuments. My best is my Kirov bust: it's a higher-end bronze that's very nearly lifesized. I also have a 30's terracotta Stalin, and one of my standing Lenins is a very nice bronze. The rest are 60's-80's aluminum castings. I find them out here in Central Asian bazaars for about $10 to $40 for the common Lenin, and more for Stalin and bronzes of all types. One thing I can say is that genuine, period Stalins are NOT easy to find out here. Lenin is a piece of cake: I can two to four of him every Saturday morning.

The George Bush menorah is well, interesting... Are those bullets instead of candles? You need some help with home decorating, like one of those "home makeover" shows...

First of all,-it's cartriges, not bullets. And they are instead of candles.BTW, Menorah from Israel and made of silver. Yes, I need some help with home decorating! But few girls, I wanted to merry said same thing: first get rid of Firearms. My answer was: Firearms will be sold after my soul, Collection of Awards and Busts and before Lavric. So, I am single & do not have help with Home decorating.
