Hi,

i think recipient did this number by himself, or also can be that seller did it, that it will look INTERESTING. It's really nothing special, to be honest with you. And one more thing, there is really nothing to to with GULAG.

Regards,

Lauri

Sovvisor,

I agree with Rusty on this one. Most of the time, award document number was stamped onto defense medals (there are a few illustrated in McDaniel's). In this case, it clearly was not stamped at the Mint, as they did not have a proper punch for the letter "Ж" and they punched it in 3 separate elements: ">", "|" and "<"

Also pay attention to the booklet: the photo is cut and there it is not stamped.

I know that there are many different booklets out there but for the reasons mentioned I am suspicious for it.

Jussi-Pekka,

A lot of Order Books have photos that are not stamped, that is not unusual.
What I don't like about this one is the type of photo; when the award was military, they tend to show people in uniform.

When I saw the photo the first time i got the feeling that he was a fisher man.

The letters are different series. In some award booklets it tells who has given the medal.

Letter " ж " means in some medals that the medal is given from "the advice of Groznemski's regional representatives of workers". Maybe that is also that way in that medal's booklet.

Groznemski = I am not sure if the name is transliterated right.

Marc,

If not stamped at the Mint, where and who would do it?
Can't find one on PMD's Guide. Can you please give me a page # ?

Thanks.

Rusty,

Have you seen many of these? First time I see one.

Anyway, curious piece and interesting thread.

Yes, interesting case.
I would personally think (or guess) this has been made by the vet himself , or his family, because of the non professional manner it has been done. This hand was visibly not used to do it...

About PMD's book, I have only seen such modifications (but not hand-engraved) in the Duplicate and Reissue section. if someone has a pic, it would be bery interesting to see...

Art, anything in the tons ;) of pics given py Paul to the Forum ?

Cheers.

Ch.

This S/N is not officially done and is not in the PDM book. I agree with the assessment that either:
1 - done by the seller to increase its appeal (since an unnumbered Bravery Medal with booklet, even with photo, is common OR
2 - done by the vet
There is no way to tell so just like many "duplicate" pieces, it hopefully shouldn't attract a premium added to the price or we'll start seeing other meatheads start tampering with medals.

Could you explain what you mean by this? Who or what is Groznemsky and how does it correspond to a "zh"? I'm unfamiliar with this and would like to learn more.
