Medal for Service in State Security ("KhAD Medal"), 1987-1992
Made of Brass with Blue and Red lacquer.
Also often called the "Afghan KGB Medal" The inscription under the state emblem is "WAD", abbreviation for Ministry of State Security. The earlier acronym of this organization was KhAD, for Khadamat-e Ettel'at-e Dawlati or "State Information Services". Eddie

Re: Unknown Afghanistan Security medal (Medal for Service in State Security)
The KhAD (Khadamat-e Atela'at-e Dawlat -- خدمات اطلاعات دولتی) Medal on its proper ribbon, though without enamel (?) (I have just the image, not the medal, the ribbon is immensely elusive).

Ed,
This medal has a very unusual suspension ring that make me question its authenticity. Marc |

I was showing it mainly to show the ribbon. When I find it, I'll post my mis-ribboned specimen. (Now . . . which box was it in???) |

Hello,
This is the first time I have seen the proper ribbon for this medal. Very nice. Thanks for sharing. Oh, I forgot to mention that the ribbon to this particular medal is so difficult to find; I've only have seen a drawing of the ribbon. Some where there is a roll of this ribbon and I can't wait to get my hands on it. v/r Dat Nguyen |

Re: Unknown Afghanistan Security medal (Medal for Service in State Security)
Well, my mis-ribboned KhAD medal finally surfaced (misfiled among the Afghan royal medals :( ).
And a closeup on the much-discussed suspension ring. It is also interesting that the medal has the post-1987 coat of arms. All the ones I have (this one and two naked) are the same. (Should any ribbon ever surface, I'd very much appreciate being kept in mind.) |

Re: Unknown Afghanistan Security medal (Medal for Service in State Security)
Greetings to all,
After many years of searching on the internet and markets in Afghanistan, I finally have the proper ribbon for the KhAD medal. So without further ado, may I present ... the ribbon ... My Afghan commie collection is now complete. v/r Dat Nguyen Oh, found the ribbon mounted on another Afghan medal in a tray of common soviet medal at a gun show in VA. Did not know it this was the "ribbon" or not but I purchased it anyway. |

Re: Unknown Afghanistan Security medal (Medal for Service in State Security)
Based on the legend, this is actually a medal of the WAD (Wizarat-i Amaniyyat-i Dawlati or Ministry of State Security) and not the KhAD (Khidamat-e Aetla'at-e Dawlati or State Intelligence Agency). So it must be post-1986. Unless there are both "KhAD" and "WAD" varieties? That would be exciting!
