Re: NKVD-KGB: Rise Through the Ranks

That PRB Order Of 9-9-44 1st Class really dwarfs the standard size Soviet Medals.... What would the four awards after it be?

Not that I know of. As far as I know, Andropov did not hold any military rank during his time as head of the KGB. I am sure someone can put this better, but it is a matter of position rather than rank.

The orders next to the huge Bulgarian award are
Czechoslovak "Order of Red Banner"
East German "Order Fatherland Merit" III class
East German "Combat order Merit for the Nation and Fatherland" I and II class
Poland "Order Polonia Restituta"

I think I have a text list of all his awards somewhere.

Last time I was in the KGB Museum in Moscow his tunic was on display, under glass. I took a photo of it and I think it is in another thread.

Four stars?
From what we've seen from photos of high-ranking KGB officers, the uniforms are usually Red Army issue. Personally, I have not seen a photo of a KGB officer with the usual Royal Blue piping but the uniforms as such do exist. In fact, I wish I knew the thread Doug mentioned.

Re: NKVD-KGB: Rise Through the Ranks

I think (I may of course be wrong) this is the uniform Doug means:

http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...html#post21662

It is not Fedortjuk, but one of his KGB fellows, Viktor Chebrikov.

Re: NKVD-KGB: Rise Through the Ranks

Thanks Patrick. Good find.:thumbsup This is only a guess, but with a few exceptions, KGB generals were appointed to the KGB after serving elsewhere (Red Army mostly) and thus the red piping. I've only seen black and white photos of KGB generals that were straight line agency men like Oleg Kalugin.

Just guessing, Marc - so I can't "elaborate" on the above.:chuckle

Re: NKVD-KGB: Rise Through the Ranks

Is this man in the uniform of the KGB? KGB generals wore uniforms with red piping, army type, but MVD generals wore the brick-red piping. I think we have here a brick-red piping, consistent with the years of service of this gentleman (KGB chairman in 82, army general in 82, minister of the interior from 82 to 86).

I don't really follow, he was in the Ukraine KGB before the all-union KGB, why would he use a MVD uniform then?

Re: NKVD-KGB: Rise Through the Ranks

He became an army general (the rank he wear on the picture) sometime in 1982 and in december 82, he became soviet interior minister.

Федорчук, Виталий Васильевич — Википедия

It seems to me that the picture was taken during his time as MVD boss (that kind of picture in full attire were more frequent in MVD than KGB). May be an uniform just like this:

Щёлоков, Николай Анисимович — Википедия
