Medal "For Guarding The Country".

Now, one of the most difficult to obtain Romanian medals, the "Defense of the Country" Medal (Medalia "De strajã Patriei")- an Internal Ministry award given, primarily, for guarding the borders. First given in 1958, this particular example is the post-1965 variant (RSR). It is damaged- the mounting ring broke from the star. I do have a jeweler friend who, I'm sure, can repair it.

The Romanian Border Guard medal and fairly rare. The medal was instituted in 1947 and, until 1965, bore the seal of the Peoples' Republic of Romania. After 1965 (this example) it bore the seal of the Socialist Republic of Romania

Isn't it more like "On guard of the Fatherland"? Not that I am an expert in Romanian Language. Nice design, but not as well-made as most Romanian decorations.

Or "On Guard for the People"... I'm just using the most accepted English title here. I agree with your assessment of design vs manufacture and, unfortunately, have proof of the "Achilles heel" of this medal- where the supporting ring joins the star... I have another complete, but broken, medal waiting for me to take it to the jeweler for silver soldering.
