Dolf,

This is a Type 2, Variation 4. The ring is manufactured as part of the medal. Normally, there is no serial number present. I would expect to pay USD $10-$15 for one of these.

If you want a more thorough explanation of ring types, do a forum search for "ring types" I know we've covered this before in a little better detail on the forum.

I don't see any issue with authenticity.

Combat Merit

Guys,

I got a Military Merit medal (together with "My 1st Glory"). I´d like to know its type and variation, since I don´t know how to distinguish both features. Of course, any comments are welcome too.
Thanks in advice,

Esteban

Esteban,

According to Mondvor, it is a T2V3 Subvariation 1, and to McDaniel, it is T2V3.

Hi All,

This arrived recently, a type 1 V1 Medal for Combat Service no. 5055. This puts it pre-war, interesting to think that it might have been awarded in the course of the 'forgotten' war against Finland...

Cheers

Combat service conversion?

Someone offer me a Medal for combat service, marked #12125, Finnish War for sure because the number is low. But the suspension is like the more "modern" one with the common ribbon, not the "small red piece" with a screw behind as the other Finnish we normally seen. My interrogation is about the suspension, is it possible they make a "converstion" of a old medal? If yes what a fair price will be for that ?

Sorry for the lack of picture, the medal is not mine, its a part of a lot from another collector collection that I'm trying to buy and I don't have it in hand to scan.

I'm waiting for the expert advice, I have never seen something like that before, i gues its possible because the Soviet convert a lot of thing like there helmet, but I have never seen a medal like that.

Manu,

It is a well known occurence for both Combat Service and Bravery medals. These medals become T2, and lose most of their value, unfortunately.

Thanks Marc.

Thats what I was thinking, this exist but lose all the value.

I have seen the other way most of the time, Finnish/early style ribbon mounting with a high number behind...something I will NEVER buy.

Manu,

From memory, over 300,000 were issued on small screwback suspension before the regulations changed.

I would advise you to NOT buy this piece without posting a picture of the medal and getting an opinion from board members. The serial number should be hand engraved, but this is easy to fake so you should get members' consent that the piece is good. It COULD be a real piece remounted on a later suspension, but these Type Is with that low a S/N are both rare and expensive regardless of suspension. General advice - let knowledgeable people look at it before putting money down.

I don't whant to buy it anyway, I'm looking for a Finnish period medal who look like one, not for one who look like the "modern" one that I already have...

For showing picture before buy I know its better, thats why I have finally join the forum, to ask question and show other people when I'm not sure about something. And also because I almost have all the "common" stuff, those who are not faked yet and I whant to still upgrade my soviet collection by buying more rare piece. But since its a mine field, even if its seem to me a lot better then III Reich militaria who are a complete jungle, I prefer to have other people opinion before make a big investment.

For now I have to say that I enjoy my time here very much, people over here are very friendly. :)
