What I am doing for veterans
I do it PRO BONO - out of respect to veterans - some of them passed away and I did it for the family. When I heard about a veteran or veteran's family - I arrange the awards in a frame and give it to them.
Here is an example:

Tal,
Great job! I take it that his original awards were taken from him at the Soviet customs, and these are replacements, right? This is so unfair! Alexei |

Those are the original medals of this veteran. Some were missing, some he got here in Israel. He died last year and I did it for his daughter, who works with my wife.

Tal,
I saw a missing combat Service, so I figured they must have taken his original awards when he left Russia, and the poor guy had to buy replacements. Alexei |

Tal,
Thanks for showing me that there are still honorable people in this world. I started to get deceived when I saw that these people were becoming less and less. What we need is that. What you do is a little but very good example of your efforts. Regards, Esteban

Tal-
That's great! I do the same thing for American veterans here. Unfortunately, about fifteen years ago there was a fellow in this area who was travelling around to all the old retired flag and general officers in the area offering to mount up their medals. The officers got back medals in a frame... None of them bothered to check if they were actually their medals! Only after one of the retired admirals (a Medal of Honor recipient) was called by someone who saw his Medal of Honor for sale halfway across the country did anyone figure out what this guy was up to. He was taking the vet's medals, swapping them out for new ones, and then selling the originals! Led by this retired admiral, the FBI caught up with him and I think he's still in prison! Anyway, so it gets a little complex at times when I offer to mount up medals, needless to say! I normally get those cases like I use for display and mount the medals in front of the vet so they know what's there. --Dave |
