Medal "For Distinction In Protecting The State Borders Of The U.S.S.R.".
Hi gentlemen, a friend showed me a border guard medal and its doc.
I think it is a variation 3 in nickel-silver. Excellent engraving (I can see vegetation at the feet of the character); but aluminium suspension. The doc is a late variation, with a glossy cover like the doc of OGW 1985 type. Pages are OK, 1990 date, s/n correct for me, nice ink writting, KGB stamp, excatly like in mondvor pages. As you know gentlemen I'm paranoid and I would need pictures of such variations, to compare with the stuff proposed and with mondvor (excellent) pages. I'd be gratefull of such pictures. thanks! sebastien

I think it would be easier if you could post your single medal set for comment.

For Distinction in Guarding the State Border
The document award date is 1955 ... silver or silver-plated?

Ibaya,
Weigh the medallion. If silver, it should be heavier (~21g) than if silver-plated (~17g). Also, count the ribbons on the gerb. Marc |

This was awarded in 1975
now the words go in the back, and the frontier guard motif goes in the front

Apparently this is the 3rd Variation made of Copper Nickel Alloy thus the weird looking patina. I was looking for a silver version.

Type 1 Var.2 weight 21.5 grams
This is one of my favorite soviet medals design wise. Does anyone know a actual example when this medal was rewarded? And was it strictly KGB? |

Re: Safe guarding frontier medal
"Medal for Distinguished Service in protecting the state border of the USSR "is awarded to military border guards and other soldiers and other citizens for combat exploits and Merit, demonstrated in the protection of state borders of the USSR." [trans.] - Mondvor website. За отличие в охране государственной границы СССР
I'd check it out and compare yours to the examples - especially the nose of the guard. Phillip

Phillip[/QUOTE] I am pretty confident my example is a good one. But if there are second opinions please feel free to remark. I bought this from the Tenafly NJ web site |
