Guys

With the newest additions from Kim we now have all 43 Foreign HSU
Awardees! :D
Now we "only" have to clear the question marks.
I found a few details earlier and added them straight away.

Christophe,

Very interesting " Does it mean that this 11000-11500 range has been dedicated to foreign awardees" ?

"Except the two first ones (#21 - 1936, and #10708), all other SN of foreign HSUs are in the #11000-11500 range.
And this covers a period of 28 years (1960-1988) !!
And globally the order has been respected !! (what is not always the case with other orders)".

Of course we need the missing numbers to be sure but it is starting to look that way.

Eddie.

So keeping track of numbers are not a thing you should do while home with a fever. Today I feel a bit better and have found more of my mistakes. Eddie you can just cut/paste this list, I think it’s good now.

I came to think of Sorge when I wrote this. Technically wasn’t he a German? He became a citizen in the USSR in 1924, but never told the German authorities.

I don’t think that there are any special serial numbers for foreigners. After all, the majority of those other numbers, 11000-11500, are for USSR citizens. I think it’s a chronological thing. Few HSU were awarded, compared to ww2, so the numbers are closer in range.

Thanks for the correct spelling of Gibelli. Now I could even find him on the internet :D

Thanks, all. A good example of the kind of collective research project we can take on using the forum.

A suggestion: Would the list not be easier to use and easier to make deductions from if the awardees were sorted by number of award and or date. Also makes the "eras" clear" GPW 1-16, foreign friends 17-28, and cosmonaut/passengers 28-43. In addition, any potential problems will be highlighted for further checking.

As:

1. Volkan S Goranov, (Zachariev, Z.S.), Bulgaria 31/12/1936. #21

2. Primo Gibelli , Italy, Pilot/Instructor 31/12/1936 #?

3. Otakar Jaroš , Czech, 1st Lt. 18/4/1943 #?

Ed,

Thanks ;)

I was going to do it later when all the information is there.
Do you possibly have any of the missing Award numbers?

Eddie.

I hope to see and photograph Wing Commander (Retd.) Rakesh Sharma's group this summer, but in the interim I have friends setting up a time for them to visit him and record his HSU and Lenin numbers. Also hope to do a similar study on the medal group of his backup, Air Commodore (Retd.) Ravish Malhotra.

Wish I could help with more.

5. Aniela Krzywo , Poland, Medic , 11/11/1943 #?

Anela KSHIVON (Anela KSZIVON) - 11.11.1943 In latin it is Aniela Krzywo
" It is written, that she was medsesestroj and rescued wounded men.

If this is correct.. "she".. was the only Foreign Female Awardee of the HSU!

I have just looked in Henry Sakaida's book 'Heroines of the Soviet Union' she is listed as a machine gunner. Here are the details from the book.

Private Aneila Tadeushevna Kzhivon, Polish, (1925-12/10/43) Awarded HSU 11/11/43

Only non Soviet female HSU Sacrificed her life to save her wounded comrades
and important headquarters documents when their truck was attacked by German planes.

Maybe Henry will be able to tell you more.

Mark
