Somewhere in the back of my mind is the notion that the "catch up" medals and duplicates (reissues) often had a heavy gold wash. I think I remember reading it somewhere here.

I do recall seeing a Stalingrad and 30 yrs SAF medals for sale by the NJ man. They were called "voenkomat issues" in the description. They were very very shiny, just like if they were polished with Brasso or something like that. That´s was the main thing that called my attention (besides from the price, of course :D)

Re: Leningrad with engraved Suspension !?

Guys, guys, guys!

Let's not mix up everything here, please.
What's all that talk about voenkomat stuff here?
Effectively, voenkomat medals were struck in brass and then gold plated, but that was basically starting in the early 1960's, these medals having a struck, rounded ring.

Jens showed a medal that was clearly made in the 1940's, with a soldered ring.
Fact is that, for whatever reason, a small quantity of wartime made medals were gold plated at the mint. It has be suggested that they were to be awarded to "other than ordinary" people; I personally do not believe in this as I have seen many instances of ordinary soldiers, NCOs or even civilians having received a gold plated medal.
The only thing that we can tell today is simply that these gold-plated Leningrad medals are scarcer than the non-plated ones, and that is about it.

Now, an interesting development on this theme is what the Russians call the "polished" medals. Effectively, these are early strike, gold-plated Leningrad medals that were then refinished at the Mint; the most common variant is a mirror-like sky surface, some other scarcer variants have mirror-like letters, rim, spike, etc. Here are a few examples.

Re: Leningrad with engraved Suspension !?

Interesting. It looks like these were done by hand or a machine set to "polish" some raised surfaces on the medal.

Re: Variation leningrad medal

So these two are V1&2 of a T1 DoL? I only found out about this variation in the recent engraved suspension post.
Ya can't tell from the image but the one on the left, besides being really clean, unworn and crisply struck has all if not most of it's gold wash still present. Nicer than I remembered, actually. :)

Re: Variation leningrad medal

Eric, I knew something good would happen when you went looking at your medals to answer your question about the suspensions.;)

The one on the left looks like it was treated very well and not rubbed or polished to the point of looking like the other one. Nice.:thumbsup
