"Friendship" Medal.

Here is the document for Friendship Medal #0696 awarded to Soviet citizen Sergey Afanasevich Rysevets on 12.12.1967 by decree 166 of the Presidium of the People's Great Khural.

As far as I am aware, this is the earliest and lowest-serial numbered awarding of the medal that we have observed.

Cheers,
Alex

Re: Sergey Afanasevich Rysevets

Interesting. Thanks. Do you mave the matching medal or just the document?

My records show the observed serial number range of this medal as 0015-11852. Many awards went to Soviet friends, of course, but many awards were also to Mongolians.

Unfortunately, just the doc.

Thanks for the note about the range. I must have been looking at an outdated list. Do you know of any of these earlier examples were awarded to Soviets?

#1761, awarded Pavel Alexeyeivich Kurochkim (Soviet), 12 November 1968.

Not the world's best scans, alas.

And the remainder of the document.

I may also have some orphaned documents, somewhere.

Medal "Friendship"

Established in April 1967, the medal was awarded "for outstanding contributions and merit in strengthening brotherly friendship between the MPR and other socialist countries and advancing economic, cultural, and scientific collaboration."

About 18,000 of these medals were produced (1-6000 in 1967, 6001-13000 in 1971, and 13001-18000 in 1981). Most were awarded to Soviets, with only about 60 were awarded to Mongolians. Other friendly countries were not forgotten and Urnukh cites the example of 40 awards to Vietnam, 170 to the DDR, and 50 to Bulgaria.

Based on confirmed medals "in captivity", the lowest observed serial number is 00015 and the highest is 11852.

Urnukh pp. 197-99, Battushig #A44.

Re: Medal “Friendship”

As a sample of a document (standard award booklet), this award to a Soviet, Mark Marcovich Kalik (Jewish, possibly Baltic or Belorussian) on 6 August 1979.

Re: Fake Mongolian Medal "Frienship"?

Since there isn't a thread for possible fakes from Mongolia (yet), I am putting this one here.

Having looked at the Battushig photo and those in this thread: http://soviet-awards.com/forum/sovie...riendship.html, I am a little dubious of this one for sale on the big auction site.

Not that I've seen many fakes of Mongolian awards before, this one caught my attention mostly because of the very unlikely serial number (0123). Sure it could happen and has for every award, but I'm a skeptic when it comes to practically everything on that site.

Moreover, the "wavy" enamel work in the suspension looks to be of a lower quality than the standard Mongolian production.

It would be a relatively easy one to fake, in my opinion, and it certainly has the attention of a number of folks. In fact, I expect the current price of $162.50 to double before the auction ends.

Any thoughts from what Mongolian experts we have remaining?

Phillip

It all looks legitimate to me. I have dealt with the seller offering the item for sale for years and the percentage of fakes that passes through his hands (that he then offers for sale) is extremely small.

#0123 is just as likely to come onto the market as #0122 or #0124, as each are unique.

With an end result of $190, it is pretty obvious the consensus is that it is real. The last couple I have seen sell have gone for the same range.

This seller starts many auctions at 99 cents and lets the market find the correct price - how it should be.
