Re: Fake Ushakov Medals

Paul,

We don't do authentications here, we can only offer opinions. I like it, but need a more detailed scan of the front of the medallion. The suspension is not original. The chain looks good, but need more detailed scans.

Excuse me but I have still a couple questions concerning the working method.
What does you with orders/medals where not examples are ?
Or still unprecedented versions?

Alexei ,

Regarding messages ##36-40 - here are some additional images the seller sent me - it looks like the chain, if it is original, has full length.

Thanks a lot.
Paul

Re: Fake Ushakov Medals

Paul,

The suspension IMO is not original. For some reason, I am not overly enthusiastic about the chain.

Paul,

I agree with Marc completely - the suspension is not original, as I have mentioned before. It's impossible to be sure about the chain from these pictures, but it does have some replacement links. It could be all fake, I can't see.

Marc,

The Soviet awards have been studied to death, so unknown variations don't happen very often. Last time I checked I had about 90,000 detailed scans of Soviet O&M showing all possible types and variations, so I know every set of dies and every stamp ever used by the mints. It also helps to have copies of original mint specs.

Once in a while I do see an unusual piece - at the moment I am authenticating a Kutuzov 3rd class, s/n 13XX, which has an unusual mint mark for this range, obverse, that belong to a suspension type, and a reverse with concentric rings, characteristic of screwback type. Still, based on the details I can tell that it is a genuine piece.

Alexei

Re: Fake Ushakov Medals

Yes…ok,
I have also started with a database.
I have what more questions
How have you started?
How classified the photograph? (in the beginning)(original of fake)
Where have you the photograph from?
Are there official source where you can obtain the photograph of all ranges?
Sorry for the questions, but if I start something I also want to know how everything work.

Re: Fake Ushakov Medals

Marc,

I used to be a dealer and had access to thousands of items, which helped a lot. I was aslo asking a LOT of questions.

There is no single source for pictures, but for starters I would recommend ÎÐÄÅÍÀ È ÌÅÄÀËÈ ÑÑÑÐ

For starters, I don't like the style of the serial number digits. Is there a visible "seam" running along the outside edge of the medal?

Re: Fake Ushakov Medals

Andreas,

Possibly a fake, but better scans are needed, especially of the obverse of the medallion.
